Parta Jacka Crowa pracuje jako zvláštní komando na vyhledávání a likvidaci upírů. Po úspěšném zničení jednoho z upířích hnízd se však na oslavu v malém motelu dostaví nezvaný host v podobě vůdce upírů, který vyvraždí většina Crowova týmu. Přežijí pouze Jackův kamarád Montoya a Katrina, kterou ale vůdce kousnul do nohy a ona se postupně mění v upíra. Odpověď na obrovskou výdrž a rychlost vůdce upírů dostane Jack na setkání s biskupem, který mu řekne, že se jedná o Jana Valka, kterého církev téměř upálila před několika stoletími. On však přežil a vrátil se jako upír. Jack musí začat rychle jednat, protože Valek chystá vlastní plán, který mu má dopomoci k tomu, aby se mohl pohybovat i ve dne. Dostane k tomu neobvyklého spolupracovníka, kněze Adama Guiteaua, ke kterému Jack chová značnou nedůvěru a dává ji chvílemi dost najevo.

Imo there's nothing better for a vampire movie, when it's got a lot of western vibes going on in it. Western & Vampire folklore seem to always mesh together brilliantly. Just like in "Near Dark" John Carpenter's Vampires is no different. For me, the two biggest strengths 💪 of this film, is "Terry Silver's" 🥋 😅 "Thomas Ian Griffith" performance as "Valek" 🧛🩸 he absolutely 💯 steals the show, whenever he's onscreen as our villain. And of course our protagonist of the film James Woods as "Jack Crow" brings a lot of energy, and is quite an unpleasant character, which for me makes "Jack Crow" all the more compelling. He's very rough around the edges sort of speak, which was perfect for this film. A very interesting character, that you can't help but love. Visually, I've always thought that, the desolate landscapes, isolated buildings and that whole dusty desert surrounding vthing it has going on just creates great atmosphere that goes hand in hand with the violence in this movie. The supporting cast is also great Daniel Baldwin & Sheryl Lee and there whole relationship in the film as Tony & Katrina bring more dynamism and depth to the film, outside of the main plot & focus of the movie. But ultimately, what "Vampires" (1998) will always be remembered for is its very gory bloody vampire attacks and highly intense action is what makes the violence a massive strength as well. It's part of this movies "DNA" 🧛♂️🧬🩸🦇 However, there are a couple of flaws which is the reason why I didn't give it the maximum 5 Stars! I would have liked for them to have tapped into "Katrina's psychological tension a bit more and expand on it. Just to give it that extra filling. The pacing is also an element that I'm very mixed on as well. There are certain points/moments in the film, where I felt that we needed to see more of "Valek." And I think a lot to do with why I see his character and the performance from Thomas Ian Griffith as a strength is a lot to do with that reason, it's a weird one this. It just also made me appreciate his presence everytime he was onscreen even more. We don't quite see him enough as I would have liked. But absolutely loved "Valek" and the performance from "Thomas Ian Griffith" anyway and both him and the character were amazing 👏👏👏 But overall, 🧛 "John Carpenter's" Vampires (1998) is a very very solid and competently made vampire film. This is imo "John Carpenter's" last very good & ambitious project and movie that he ever gave us. I have a massive soft spot and a load of nostalgia for this film. Love ❤️🖤🧛🦇🩸 Vampires!!!!

- TomVader15. července 2026This was the first DVD I ever bought. I think it was 40.00 and it was mind-blowing how clear it looked on my 26 inch tube tv. That being said, it's an ok movie. It may not have been the first, but it was certainly an early example of the reimagining of the classic vampire story. Yeah, there's always the ”someone got bit, and we’ve only got x time to save them” and the whole ”we're all so bored of fighting vampires" tropes, but the movie plays out OK, but runs a bit long for me. If you haven't seen it, and you like slightly off the main path monster movies, give it a watch.

It plays more like a vampire-themed action Western than a straight horror movie, and James Woods brings a lot of energy as the cranky lead. The plot’s pretty simple, but the dusty setting, solid villain, and gritty vibe make it entertaining enough. Not amazing, but definitely a fun watch if you're into old-school vampire flicks.
