- Christopher Pucknell23. června 2025Not my favourite Hitchcock by a long shot, though there were some interesting moments. Not that I'm an expert on the period, but having a Female perspective of an abuser (or is he?), on film, in the 40's, that seems like something quite special. The film has plenty of flaws, the plot isn't great, and it quickly falls into obscurity following Hitchcock's later masterpieces, but the setting, the period, the female protagonist, and some of the effects in dramatic sequences make this an interesting watch.

This slow burn thriller carefully leaves breadcrumbs of an ending he envisioned but wasn’t allowed to make. To get around the studio’s restrictions he used techniques and choices of mere suggestion to make you think twice— which only reinforces the film’s title ‘Suspicion’ along with further proving he is indeed the undeniable Master of Suspense.

Zámožná Lina MacLaidlawová (Joan Fontaine) uteče proti vůli rodičů s pohledným Johnniem Aysgarthem (Cary Grant) a pak zjistí, že je zadlužený a bez peněz. Johnnie nemůže najít práci a svatební dary od tchána prodá, aby splatil dluhy. Lina je přesvědčená, že ji Johnnie neopustí. Johnnieho přítel Beaky (Nigel Bruce) za záhadných okolností zemře a Lina se obává, že je za jeho smrt zodpovědný Johnnie. Ten to popírá, ale varuje ji, aby policii neříkala nic o jeho finančních transakcích s Beaky. Lina najde mezi Johnnieho věcmi knihu o jedech. Pak se dozví, že se Johnnie neúspěšně pokoušel vybrat její životní pojistku. Tu ale může vybrat pouze po její smrti.
