One Battle After Another
My first thought after watching was "wow, what did Lacoste ever do to Paul Thomas Anderson and/or Colleen Atwood to deserve this cameo?" My second was "damn this was such a f*cking good movie." I was transfixed the entire length of the movie; the performances of Leo, Sean, Benicio, Regina, and Teyana had me in a chokehold. I intend to watch it again to see what nuances I might have missed the first viewing. And the music...every track perfectly chosen. Call it one of the best movies of the year. But please, let's not call it a Christmas movie.

Oh. What. Fun.
Oh. Not. Fun. I really really wanted to love this movie. After all, the cast is pretty good and the trailer gives a certain amount of “Family Stone” vibes. Sadly, I found the whole movie to feel tense… the scenes strained. Perhaps what it was is that I didn’t really LIKE anyone in the movie. There’s so much fighting without a balance of meaningful moments between characters. I was most disappointed that Pfeiffer’s character ending up displaying as unhinged-but-not-in-a-funny-way. As a mother, there were some truths uncovered, but there was also a lot of moments from Claire that had me saying “you’re doing this to yourself!!”
Oh. What. Fun.
Paradise (2025) - S1 • E1 - Wildcat Is Down
Excited to get on the Paradise bandwagon. So far so good- strong first episode that kept my attention all the way through.

F1: The Movie
Predictable dialogue. Contrived story. Completely ridiculous, but not in a good way. Brad Pitt is a yawn. As someone who has followed F1 for several years and watched many races, this movie fell flat for me. While some scenes were definitely exciting in a very superficial way, the movie overall was a big eye roll. It felt like every 30 minutes someone in the studio decided the audience needed an explanation of what was going on- queue explanatory monologue from cast member. This feels like a tactic now used because it’s assumed the audience is distracted by their phones, or perhaps it was just lazy filmmaking.

The 5th Wave
This movie was so corny, but that's why I watched it. If you're into unrealistic, silly alien takeover movies, then add this to your list. It's got a couple of familiar faces (Chloë Grace Moretz, Liev Schreiber), so it feels a little higher quality than flicks of similar substance. Think of it as a great choice for a rainy Saturday movie at home...or if you're hungover and might nap throughout.

Roofman
There are people who make good choices in life. And then there's Jeffery Manchester. This is a fascinating true story that had me researching every single detail (to compare what was shown in the movie to what really happened) after I finished watching. Channing Tatum as the antihero Jeff was somewhat believable... but for some reason, for me, in any movie he's in, it's hard to think of him as anything other than Channing Tatum. I wanted to get lost in his character more, but he succeeded in riling up my emotions through his portrayal of a selfish, lost criminal.

Novocaine
Ok, hi, Jack Quaid. It's nice to see a new face in role that could have been lobbed over to Ryan Reynolds or Chris Pratt. The movie was fun, moved at a good clip, and had jarring moments of brutality and gore, which gave it an edge. The idea that the man had never tried pie in his lifetime seemed a bit far fetched, though. ;)

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The grim reality of the dark middle ages, but make it hilarious. Is it the perfect movie? No. Is it absurd? Yes. Do i use the phrase "TIS BUT A FLESH WOUND" more than I should? Also yes. It's not a question of should you see it, but WHY haven't you seen it already. And if you have...what's your favorite line to quote?

You're Cordially Invited
More cowbell! Haters gonna hate but Will Ferrell fans (like me) will have a real good time watching. A nice mix of comedy legends and new faces, and a plot that’s ridiculous and familiar, yet easy to watch because of it. Fun weekend watch

Next Goal Wins
If you like stories of perseverance and the human condition that you can also watch with the kiddos (9yo and up, my opinion), this is a good one. Witty dialogue, authentically played characters, and an overall charm that left me feeling really good after. Sometimes "based on a true story" can be a real eye roll, but this one was like eating a warm chocolate chip cookie (maybe sometimes where there were little bits of salt that didn't mix in right with the dough for the tough scenes). An interesting, surprising lead role for Michael Fassbender.

Emilia Pérez
A real mixed bag. As I say when my son's soccer team sets up a play but doesn't finish in goal, it was just a "good idea." So many moments in the film captured intense emotion and controversial topics, but simultaneously watered each other down. Zoë Saldaña is an incredible talent and brings a unique energy to the role-- she is so captivating to watch. The attempt at weaving in unexpected musical numbers throughout was ambitious and interesting, but ended up being more of a "good idea" than an actual win. Given the hype I wanted more from the movie. But I champion filmmakers and actors taking risks, so I appreciate the film from that perspective.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Great “watch on a plane” movie. This might be a bit controversial, but I enjoyed it more than the original. Struck a good balance of quirky, sentimental, and grotesque.
