After leaving his island posting, the ever-bumbling Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) seeks a quieter life as Detective Inspector in his fiancée Martha’s hometown — only to find the countryside comes with its own brand of madness. This is classic comfort viewing: a sweet, slightly clumsy police procedural where every episode follows a tried-and-true rhythm — crime, confusion, revelation, and resolution, all buoyed by a cast of wonderfully eccentric locals. The cases are rarely brutal, the tone remains warm, and Humphrey’s mix of brilliance and awkwardness keeps things delightfully human.
