- SpikyCactus2026年8月23日Top badass moment? Bob Hoskin’s character Vince, in his one shouty scene, gets to call Sam a cad. Seriously, when was the last time, if ever, you called anyone a cad? Or indeed was accused of being a cad yourself? A son and mother move to London from a place called The North. Lots of weird coincidences then conspire to give us a mother and daughter love triangle, plus a B-plot that’s also (of course) a romance. And we all lived happily ever after, well more or less. For a romcom it’s actually quite light on comedy and heavy on drama. It reminded me of the can of Jubel Beer Cut With Lime I drunk last week – that was light on lime and heavy on lager; in fact, if I hadn’t read the tin I probably wouldn’t have even noticed the lime in it. I did at least notice the comedy in this film, but it wasn’t the sort that makes you laugh out loud very much; however, it did a good job of the drama, which was helped by having some decent actors in it who could make the most of the script. And it has a nice soundtrack too. And I fell in love with Amanda Ryan AND her character, I mean, who wouldn’t? One major highlight is the big, fluffy, black and white cat, who at least on one occasion, is allowed to speak their own lines without them being dubbed in post-production. It’s appalling that it wasn’t even credited at the end, shocking. The film also blabs the truth about PR work – that it’s vacuous and shallower than an empty child’s paddling pool that has a big rip in its plastic base, in Death Valley, in summer, during a heatwave, that’s been put inside an entirely waterproof building that doesn’t have its own, independent water supply. And the air value used to blow up the sides is broken too, so they can’t be inflated. After a bit of a slow, confusing start, I grew to quite like this film. I always enjoy seeing London featured in movies (I was bought up there) and despite being a hate-filled pessimist that always expects the worst, I’m quite the secret romantic. (Okay, maybe I actually do need my own PR consultant to work on my image and presentation.) And let’s face it, The Korgis “Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime” has the power to make or break any relationship if played at the right time. Plus this movie has gay Giles in it too – I always enjoy seeing Anthony Head play other characters. Technically it fine, the plot’s fairly original (for a romcom, so remember we’re considering a pretty low bar here), the script’s decent and the acting’s convincing. So all in all, I rather enjoyed it. But if you don’t you may find visiting the film’s official website (according to the link on Wikipedia) more to your taste, which now seems to have more of a focus on porn and gambling. 1 cat, no chainsaws or decapitations.
