- Alex | Pop Culture Brain2025年3月7日Bong Joon-ho dared to ask what if Idiocracy meets Avatar And well, mission accomplished I saw Mickey 17 so here’s the good and the bad without spoilers Parasite, in my opinion, is a masterpiece So I was anticipating and also dreading what director Bong Joon-ho would do next Turns out I had nothing to worry about, because his follow up Mickey 17 Is another banger but for completely different reasons This sci fi dark comedy throws back to a lot his previous work Echoing Okja and Snowpiercer in equal measure But it’s a lot more like the former in tone — because this movie is capital H Hilarious I was laughing out loud throughout. It was easily the most fun I’ve had at the movies so far this year And that was no easy task, because the tone director Bong and the cast accomplish here is really tricky It has to remain tense and exciting to pull of the science fiction adventure stuff But also has to be broad and wacky enough to be land the comedy And at any moment things could have gone off the rails by being too over the top But they never did All the performances were on the exact same page about what this movie was It all felt of a piece and that requires clear vision from the director and a sense of continuity among the actors The whole cast is worth mentioning, but Robert Pattinson was genius in multiple roles Mark Ruffalo was bonkers and hysterical - not far from his Poor Things performance While Steve Yeun has a brilliant monologue late in the film Likewise, Bong Joon-ho uses some clever unconventional editing techniques to hook you in The production design was thoughtful, intriguing, and expansive And like so many of Bong’s previous movies, the satire was on point That said the overall theme is one we've seen many times before The movie’s climax kind of devolves into a more typical sci fi adventure Which felt a little less special and unique compared to the rest of the movie And the sound design in the climax was rough, I lost a lot of dialogue But in general Mickey 17 is a blast and another achievement for Bong Joon-ho
- rg94005天前Mickey 17 feels pretty signature Bong Joon Ho, the humor, the critique of capitalism, and his passion for environmentalism rolled up into a blockbuster budget. I would say it's kind of like a cross between Snowpiercer's aesthetics and Okja's themes and tone. This might alienate people who were expecting something more in line with his last movie, Parasite. I think the premise lends itself to a fairly biting critique of capitalism and the way workers are expendable tools, cogs in a larger machine. But outside of the very concept of Mickey being an expendable, the movie doesn't really sharpen this particular theme, instead focusing most of its runtime on the environmentalism aspect. A lot of the interesting threads mentioned in the first half actually end up feeling a bit underbaked or abandoned for this plot instead which more or less takes over the entire second half of the movie. I don't think it's a bad half or anything, but it does feel very reminiscent of Okja whereas I do think Bong Joon Ho is best when he's doing something completely new even if it is in service to consistent themes. The first half feels like that. It talks about the ethical dilemmas, introduces some fun interpersonal dynamics, and has some genuinely great moments. It's a shame so much of that isn't expanded upon because I was feeling very strongly about the movie at that point. The performances are mainly what you would expect from a BJH movie, zany characters and very over-the-top villains. Robert Pattinson is fantastic, fully committing to the bit and showcasing enough range to make me truly believe he was two different characters. I definitely laughed, and I think BJH is incapable of making a bad movie even if this one did feel like it missed the mark in being one of his best ones.
- DoggesAndCattes2025年5月1日You don't need to watch Mickey 1 through 16 to enjoy this film. Mickey 17 is its own self contained story that is both entertaining and well done. Great to see returning cast play all new characters with Robert Pattinson reprising the titular role as Mickey Barnes. Looking forward to Mickey 18!
- Rievous2025年4月7日Honestly, it's the most original film I've seen at the cinema in quite a while. So many films these days seem to be remakes, reboots, or live-action adaptations. It's not the best film ever made or a masterpiece of cinema, but it was genuinely entertaining and enjoyable—and that's sometimes all a film needs to be.
- Allie Tran2025年3月31日First of all, those “creeper” creatures are the cutest things I’ve ever seen. The concept as a whole was brilliant and there was a lot to work with. Although it tackles the philosophy of cloning head first, I still feel like it could’ve done a bit more with it. Majority of the film hit for me, some didn’t.
- AmpleVisionFlicks2025年6月11日In an era saturated with remakes and cinematic universes, Mickey 17 stands out as a refreshing departure. A film adapted from Edward Ashton’s remarkably original novel Mickey7. While the concept may not have originated on screen, the story itself remains a bold and inventive piece of science fiction, brimming with philosophical questions and dark humor. Robert Pattinson delivers one of his most nuanced performances yet, capturing both the existential dread and the dry wit of a character caught in a bizarre cycle of sacrifice and rebirth. His portrayal anchors the film emotionally, and he’s supported by a cast whose performances are uniformly compelling and convincing. Though the movie draws from a pre-existing source, it still feels like a rare offering: smart, entertaining science fiction that doesn't talk down to its audience. It brings to the screen a story that, while born in literature, feels entirely fresh in the world of film. If you’re hungry for something that dares to be different, Mickey 17 is well worth the watch.
- Ty Leet2025年3月11日I had to ponder my rating for a long while after leaving the theater. I enjoyed the movie, but it felt like a mixed bag of random characters/events/tones that never fully realized themselves. It’s almost as if we watched the very first stringout of the dailies footage, a sculpture before the clay was molded into a clear and artistic vision. Maybe it was too much to cram into a movie, maybe too much was cut. I don’t really know what to think.
