罗拉秘史 Ratings & Reviews
- Jefferson Bittencourt2025年6月8日Masterpiece of direction, cinematography and acting. Laura is a jewel of cinema. Everything is quite right in this movie. A master degree of mise en scene.
- Rob MacKinnon2025年7月14日Man, that detective does NOT know how to do police work.
- KGM SOSA2026年2月9日Wow this is a masterpiece of film, it’s stylish, witty, seductive & intelligent, the characters are great & the story is riveting. What begins as a murder mystery slowly unravels into a tangled web of obsession, jealousy, desire & emotional manipulation; the film follows the murder of a charming beautiful woman named Laura (she really is beautiful), the male leads are her 2 competing lovers & a sharp hard edged detective. The detective falls in love with the woman whose murder he’s investigating, becoming emotionally compromised, What follows is a constant series of twists, reversals & revelations that never feel cheap. From its razor sharp dialogue to its intoxicating atmosphere, this is classic Hollywood operating at the absolute peak of its powers. Gene Tierney as Laura is jaw-droppingly beautiful & so soothing & gentle, her character is so likeable. There’s a softness & gentleness to her performance that makes her immediately likeable & deeply affecting. It’s easy to understand why every man in the film becomes obsessed with her. Clifton Webb as Waldo Lydecker is one of the great noir characters, he’s quick witted, charismatic & gloriously eccentric albeit a little smug & pretentious but you can’t help but root for him as his chemistry with Laura is impeccable yet he’s stuck in limbo not in in the friend zone yet not chosen as her lover officially. Vincent Price as Shelby Carpenter is pure duplicity. he is a social climber & not to be trusted, his excuses for things are ridiculous & he’s constantly lying & changing his story about everything, he is however nice & likeable although you can never fully trust him. Finally; Dana Andrews as Detective Mark McPherson is the most complex figure of all & difficult to explain, he’s certainly framed as the hero However when he falls in love with the murder victim he’s investigating, his investigation becomes driven not solely by justice, but by infatuation. He is compromised due to his sudden love & infatuation for Laura, he clearly wants her to be innocent so he can claim her for his self, his emotional entanglement with the “victim” is his greatest flaw, & it’s what makes the film so psychologically compelling. What’s interesting (& frankly brilliant) about Otto Preminger directing is his objectivist approach to shooting, Laura consists mostly of wider shots (American planned medium shots) with 3 or 4 people in frame, rather than relying on excessive close-ups, there’s several times throughout where Preminger actually cuts from a 4 shot to a 3 shot. But what’s more brilliant is how he’s remarkably written the characters in a way where he doesn’t write them in particularly protagonististic or antagonistic, he lets the viewer decide, whereas usually Hollywood writes its characters in a way where they decide for you whether you should view a character as the good guy or the bad guy, not Preminger though he liked it ambiguous to leave it up to the audience to decide, which for the time especially is very sophisticated writing, he was known to believe in the intelligence of the viewer, this not only respect the viewer’s intelligence, but also promotes the viewer to immerse themselves in the film & also makes the viewing unique to each viewer. Preminger also pioneered a lot of complex camera techniques, it’s interesting because ‘Laura’ employs several modern camera techniques such as whip pans & dollies, where the dolly moves off of a whip, this is so interesting to me because you weren’t seeing these kind of shot techniques in 1944, these techniques render ‘Laura’ decades ahead of its time. The score is equally essential & cannot be understated either, the tunes, particularly the main theme is very is melancholic, haunting & achingly beautiful & has that vintage classic atmosphere & beauty to it, this is one of the things that make classic film noir so special, it’s so atmospheric & riveting & ‘Laura’ does this spectacularly. I could rave about this film all day but the truth is simple: this is a must-watch film, it’s elegant, intelligent, endlessly rewatchable & emotionally rich, it’s the kind of movie that becomes a comfort watch for anyone who truly appreciates classical cinema & isn’t so dopamine fried from social media that they “don’t like old movies” (which infuriates me to hear).
