One of the unique and funniest movies I have watched this year; full of action and humour, paying loving tribute to video games, even satirizing the eccentricities and quirks of a “gamer” culture. “Free Guy” is one of the brightest movies on gaming and the gaming business, as well as maybe the funniest comedy about intellectual property rights ever created - and the clear one that actually does it justice. It is one of those action comedies that actually has something to say while still being fun from beginning to end. It mixes video game chaos with real heart and pulls it off really well. Ryan Reynolds is perfect in the lead role. He plays Guy, a cheerful and clueless background character in a video game who starts to realize his world is not what it seems. The character is lovable from the start and Reynolds brings his usual charm and humor to every scene. He is funny without trying too hard and you really root for him the whole way through. The concept is super creative. It is set in an open world video game similar to Grand Theft Auto or Fortnite and the way they bring that world to life is awesome. There are floating weapons, respawns, insane action, and just nonstop mayhem happening in the background. But what makes it work is that it never gets too overwhelming. The movie balances all the madness with a solid story. The humor is great. There are so many jokes packed into every scene. Some are subtle video game references and others are just straight up silly moments that totally work. The way Ryan Reynolds plays it with a mix of innocence and confusion makes everything funnier. The supporting cast is solid too. Jodie Comer is great as both her real world character and her in game avatar. She brings a lot of energy and is not just there as a side character. She actually has a lot to do and plays off Reynolds perfectly. Joe Keery adds a lot to the story and even Taika Waititi as the over the top villain is hilarious in his own chaotic way. The action scenes are really fun and super well done. Because it takes place inside a video game the movie is able to go all out with crazy stunts wild effects and over the top moments that feel like something straight out of a game. You never know what is going to happen next and that keeps it exciting. The pacing is fast and smooth. There are barely any slow moments. Every scene either has a laugh, a cool action bit, or something important happening to the story. It does a good job of keeping things moving while still giving you time to care about the characters. One of the best things about Free Guy is how it mixes comedy with emotion. There are moments that hit a little harder than expected and give the story some real depth. It is not just about the game world, it is also about real life choices, being yourself, and standing up for what matters. The reason I am giving it 4.5 instead of a full 5 is because while it is really fun and well made, a few parts feel a little familiar. You can tell where some of the plot is heading, and a couple jokes are a little overdone. But that is a small complaint in a movie that mostly delivers. Overall Free Guy is a super fun movie with a great cast, an original concept, and tons of heart. It is a love letter to video games and to anyone who has ever felt stuck in the background. I had a blast watching it and I would totally watch it again.

If you struggle to comprehend complexity or you just want to see Ryan Reynolds (he has likeable jovial nature) then yep, dig in but if you need any smidgen of meaning in cinema, stay clear. The film does nail the depiction of players as the sort of shallow, fast-twitch-energy, low pre-frontal-cortex fad-addicted competitive solipsistic teenage boys that people despise - certain video games (FPS, GTA, Rocket League) are dominated by these - like a homogenous slop of the worst of human character traits.
