Sam Raimi mixes superhero pulp, horror, and his trademark chaotic energy into a film that feels like it’s constantly teetering between tragedy and comicbook madness. Liam Neeson goes all in as Peyton Westlake, a scientist turned disfigured vigilante who can mimic anyone’s face for 99 minutes at a time. It’s a ridiculous premise, but the movie treats it with just enough sincerity to make it work. W hile Raimi fills the rest with exaggerated villains, twisted humor and those unmistakable kinetic camera moves. It’s rough around the edges, loud and sometimes completely unhinged, exactly the kind of movie that sticks with you because you didn’t expect it to hit as hard as it does. Darkman feels like a VHS discovery in the best way: strange, bold and impossible to forget once you’ve seen it.

Raimi aptly decided to forgo the two previous entries into the genre and relied much more heavily on the superheros pulp tradition, creating a flawed yet endearing and timeless piece of enlightened trash.
