That said this has the signature dread and tone in tact and its easy to see why people paid attention to McCarthy. You can see the genesis of his go to methods to creating that tone. Something i loved about Hokum is that is didnt spell anything out for you but gave you enough to figure things out for yourself to make some kind of sense of the story, the characters and their motivations and logic. Not sure Caveat achieved that to any degree. Its a slow burn with little payoff. Slow burns really need that big payoff to ultimately work better. “Ok but why?” best describes this.
- Kevin Ward2026年4月26日I absolutely loved Damian McCarthy’s, Oddity, so I’ve been meaning to catch up with Caveat for a while now. The approaching release of Hokum seems like a perfect time to do that. I really liked this one as well. Creepy and well-paced. I just really like the way McCarthy structures his stories, utilizing flashback structure to slowly unfold the narrative. Personal taste, but I just really like what experience of watching something with really no idea of what’s actually happening until everything kind of pieces together by the end. Though I liked how this ended, I think it was a little abrupt. Or maybe not as big of a payoff as I was hoping. Love the camera work, the sound, the production. Extremely looking forward to Hokum, but trying not to let my expectations get the best of me.
- cultfilmliker2026年4月22日This is why you don’t get involved with Family Business. Really shows how bad the gig economy has gotten Memento did it better More impressively creepy objects (and PEOPLE) from this guy. Always a good time! That woman’s teeth are terrifying! After seeing this and Hokum, I believe somebody showed this man Watership Down at like age four (side note: almost just called Watership Down ‘Battleship Potemkin’; either way it’d be a good story) “What do you want to do?” LEAVE. What the fuck. How is that even a question. At least demand a raise ffs No bathroom no food no TV - I would have definitely demanded more. My man can’t bathe or even shit properly! And you gotta be more suspicious after that phone call!! lmfao @ that painting Genius to play dress up with the body instead of, you know, breaking out of hole Had some odd, (literally) dark and meaningless lulls Effective sound! Fun ending but was it worth it? Not totally. Also shoulda had the dude squeal like a teenage girl (even more so, if that was in fact the intent)
- sanja.laz2025年5月26日It is one of the best Irish horror movies that I have watched. A trademark of Irish horror's unique blend of folklore and psychological dread. It builds tension through atmosphere and mystery rather than gore. Story is slow-burning and unsettling- a real standout in psychological horror.
- Niztradamus2025年8月2日Thrilling, mysterious and intelligently made with a small budget, It keeps you spinning up theories on what's going on, keeps you guessing about it being supernatural or psychological and it keeps you guessing who the actual adversary is. It could be anyone, even our main protagonist. The movie isn't perfect though. The pacing is slightly off in the middle and a vest that comes into play very early in the story doesn't make a whole lot of sense (it's locked but can be easily opened by not locked latches on the backside) but it is a work of art for sure. 3.5/5 Can recommend!
