Karen Tillner, who is as self-confident as she is sensitive, works as a doctor at a large clinic in Dresden. Despite her professional competence, the single mother feels that her boss, senior physician Simon Wagner, does not really take her seriously. She fails to see that Wagner is merely trying to hide his feelings for her with his arrogant macho pose. Karen's daughter Anne is more clairvoyant: she plays Cupid and invites Simon to her birthday party without further ado. But the charming Simon is not the only surprise guest: Karen can hardly believe her eyes when her father, the renowned biologist Prof. Paul Hermes, suddenly appears at the door. The two do not have a particularly good relationship - after the tragic death of Karen's mother 20 years ago, Paul abandoned his daughter: to get over his pain and feelings of guilt, he threw himself into extensive research trips that took him halfway around the world. But he was never there for his daughter. So it's no wonder that Karen reacts rather cautiously to his sudden interest in her and Anne. She has no idea that Paul is suffering from a serious illness and is therefore seeking her company. Little Anne, on the other hand, thinks her grandpa is great, especially since he gives her unusual tips on how to impress the coolest boy at school. In return, Anne wants to help him reconcile with Karen - unfortunately not always with the hoped-for success. Karen is closed to the seriously ill Paul's awkward attempts to build a fatherly relationship, as well as to the touching efforts of the enamored Simon to finally win her heart. It is only a mysterious case in the clinic in which an exotic infectious disease plays a role that brings Karen, Simon and Paul together. And finally, the suspicious Karen realizes that only through trust and openness can old injuries and repressed conflicts be resolved - and at the same time clears the way to enter into a new love.
