Set during WWII, the story gains a surprising emotional backbone. Children evacuated from the Blitz are sent to the countryside and placed in the care of Angela Lansbury’s delightfully eccentric apprentice witch. That historical grounding adds a layer of seriousness beneath the lighthearted surface, reminding you that this whimsy exists alongside very real fear and upheaval. The animated sequences are unmistakably early-’70s Disney — competent rather than revolutionary — but they carry enough character to fit the tone. What’s more impressive is how well the practical effects have held up. The magic feels physical and tactile, giving the film a sense of weight that modern polish often smooths away. And then there’s the finale: an utterly bonkers, very-of-its-time magical showdown involving enchanted armour and invading Nazis.
