This movie is really good. It’s honestly like if two psychotic serial killers picked up a camera like one minute they’re laughing and joking and getting into fights and the next minute they’re killing people like it’s so chaotic and I love it, but I also feels genuinely real.
- Michael Heimgartner2025年5月24日Shock for the Sake of Shock – A Film Without Purpose August Underground has become a cult item among fans of extreme cinema, often cited as one of the most infamous examples of the fake-snuff subgenre. But make no mistake—this is not a film for a thoughtful movie night, nor is it the kind of trashy fun you might share with friends over beers. This is cinema stripped down to pure provocation, devoid of narrative, craft, or emotional engagement. Shot to resemble a deranged home video, August Underground delivers exactly what it promises: degradation, torture, and depravity, stitched together with little regard for storytelling or structure. There’s no plot to speak of, no character development, and no attempt at moral or thematic reflection. The entire experience is designed to mimic the raw aesthetics of found footage and push viewers beyond the boundaries of comfort. In that sense, it achieves what it sets out to do. But the question remains—why? As a younger viewer, I might’ve once found this kind of cinematic extremism fascinating—shocking for shock’s sake, a kind of endurance test. But with time and maturity, it becomes clear that provocation alone isn’t enough. A film, even an extreme one, should offer something—insight, subversion, or at least tension. Here, all we’re given is a string of grotesque images meant to repulse and disturb, without context or meaning. Fake-snuff films can serve as effective tools for boundary-pushing art when wielded thoughtfully. August Underground, however, seems uninterested in anything beyond nihilistic spectacle. It lacks suspense, acting, direction, and any real cinematic merit. The “realism” here isn’t immersive—it’s numbing. August Underground exists as a curiosity piece for genre completionists and shock-horror aficionados. It’s interesting as a project, but it offers little beyond its notoriety. Not entertaining, not thought-provoking—just empty shock. Watch it once, perhaps, to say you did. Then move on.
- MrMitchie2025年4月21日I finally got to watch this movie. Here are the hard facts about it in my opinion. 1. There is no story it's just about an amateurs killing a couple of people via torture. 2. The acting is believable because of the low grade camcorder style recording. 3. It's not real it's literally an exploitation film at its core with absolutely no character build or story behind it. 4. This should not even be classified a film or movie to be taken seriously this is what you would show friends as a joke and tell them this is some lost VHS tape you found to freak them out. Loooool. This is not worth a watch. There is absolutely no substance to it at all. I don't care if they make it seem real, being sadistic does not make anything real there is much more to it. Overall don't waste your time with this there is nothing worthy of it being promoted.
