- Callum2025年12月19日⭐⭐⭐½ – Adventures in Public School — Letting Go Is the Hardest Lesson Adventures in Public School hits closer to home than I expected. It follows a painfully awkward, deeply nerdy kid stepping out of homeschooling and into the social minefield of public school, and honestly — that discomfort is the point. If you were even remotely that kid at high school, parts of this will feel uncomfortably familiar. Daniel Doheny plays the lead exactly right: not caricature-nerdy, but socially undercooked in a way that makes sense given his upbringing. His hang-ups, anxieties, and overthinking aren’t exaggerated for laughs — they’re quietly painful, and that’s what makes the character work. You’re not laughing at him so much as recognising bits of yourself and wincing. Judy Greer is excellent as the overbearing, well-meaning helicopter mum. She’s controlling, anxious, and deeply invested in her son’s success — but never villainous. What I appreciated most is that the film allows her to grow too. When her son proves he’s capable of navigating the world on his own terms, she steps back, and that release is as important as his journey forward. This isn’t a laugh-out-loud teen comedy, and it’s not trying to be. It’s gentler, quieter, and more observational — about socialisation, independence, and the strange process of becoming “normal” when you’ve never had the chance to practice. Some moments drag slightly, and it won’t resonate equally with everyone, but when it lands, it really lands. A solid, thoughtful watch — especially if school was ever a place you had to learn how to survive, not just attend. ☕ Pairing: A mug of hot chocolate — comforting, slightly awkwardly sweet, and best enjoyed slowly while you reflect on growing pains you thought you’d left behind.
