One Battle After Another
One of the best thrillers ever made. Staying true to the title, the movie is nonstop frenzy that keeps on giving. It’s funny af while also keeping you on edge the entire time. The story beats are completely unpredictable since Bob himself struggles with his next moves while Lockjaw’s twisted focus closes in on him and his daughter. The acting is just phenomenal, with Sean Penn stealing the show. His character definitely enters the hall of fame for movie villains. Benicio del Toro’s Sensei killed it with that badass poise. Leo was plain hilarious while also making the audience care deeply about his love for his daughter. Willa was also played really well, looking forward to seeing this actress in future movies. And god, Teyana Taylor is fucking magnetic in that intro. This movie is crazy, the characters are crazy and PTA is one mad lad. Very few directors manage to get me to shelve out 5 stars for a bunch of their movies. I view this movie purely as a Hollywood thriller flick which is what my rating is based on, I don’t care that it lacks political or meaningful messages despite its revolutionary themes. It’s about a washed up former rebel who’s just trying to save his daughter, nothing more. And it’s still pretty realistic, it’s extremely hard to escape the might of military superpowers, and revolutions often fail and lose steam and hope. Idk why leftists cry over shit like this, like just go start and focus on your own revolution instead of getting mad at films that are made for pure entertainment, Hollywood isn’t your saviour and never will be. Also go see this in IMAX while you can, not only is the filmmaking absolutely glorious but the score is fantastic too and the final scene is an all time classic that can only truly be enjoyed on the big screen.

I Am What I Am 2
One of the best martial arts movies I’ve seen in a long time. The story itself is simple, but the fights, animation, soundtrack, emotions and visuals are absolutely fantastic. It’s such a shame that China barely promotes these movies in the western sphere anymore. Though this is a sequel that is enhanced by watching the first movie, you can still watch this as a standalone film and enjoy the hell out of it. Also highly recommend checking out the Soundtrack Album coz it’s an absolute banger.

Sweet and simple deconstruction of marriage, dating and the feeling of love and how their differing endgames intertwine. Plot itself is okay and the characters aren’t super interesting but I enjoyed the vibes of the whole movie and liked the big picture conversations it was trying to spark. Decent romance flick to watch with a partner. P.S. Second Pedro Pascal movie in one day and also noticed that the poster is very similar to Fantastic Four.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps
With recent superhero movies skipping over origin stories, are we losing something important? It’s difficult to make the audience truly connected to the characters if the writing and plot isn’t anything special, and unfortunately I found this movie to be mediocre at best. Spoilers Ahead. Reed Richards barely uses any of his powers until the very end of the movie. They did a good job establishing how his mind works and the kind of calculated choices he’s inclined to make, while also having to wrestle with his love for his son. But his character also felt a bit monotone, I can’t believe they didn’t capitalize on Pedro Pascal’s natural charm. I like Vanessa Kirby and she definitely fits the role of Sue Storm, but again her entire personality here is of being the protective mother and not much else is explored. It felt mostly like a repeat of her role in Pieces of a Woman (2020). Johnny Storm was by far the most interesting, he isn’t just a smug playboy this time around, he’s actually intelligent and deeply invests himself in solving a problem. The Thing’s CGI was fantastic, I’m really digging the new look. While they do touch on his internal conflicts in a few subtle moments, his character and storyline is mostly unexplored. He does serve as a great support member for the rest of the team, but I’d really love to see his arc explored in depth as he has had the most to lose out of all the members. Honestly the intro made me excited about the characters, their personality shined through at the start and the baby raising montage was great but Reed and Sue progressively got more one note (understandable while they’re dealing with a world ending threat, but still a bit boring to watch) while Ben’s arc wasn’t given much attention. Galactus looks and feels menacing but I have no idea why I should even care about this villain. It’s just another ancient being who has an unsatiated hunger to consume worlds. But why? What’s his origin story? The Silver Surfer looked cool and the chase scenes were sick, but again her backstory and turning back to the good side at the end is so predictable. Speaking of chase scenes, slingshotting your spaceship through the horizon of a black hole is now officially a cliche. Also what powers does the baby have and why is it so important? You’ll have to wait for that answer in future movies lol. I do always ask for more serious movies from Marvel, but this one was overly serious with a shallow plot and just makes the whole mood depressing. Speaking of the good aspects, the production design was superb, I was glad to experience this totally different retrofuturist earth. The intro and world building was really good. I think the visuals throughout the film were immaculate. The score was great too, and the action scene in space was pretty riveting. Too bad the movie has a whole is just okay, it would’ve benefited from a longer runtime where they let us explore the characters in depth in the first half and then deal with a big threat in the second. Hollywood needs to take some notes from anime on how to make engaging characters and plots. These marvel movies continue to feel very unoriginal with boring villains and it’s high time they get their game together. Also stop wasting our time with unfunny pointless post-credit scenes. Although I wasn’t a big fan of the movie, I did like all the characters and I’m looking forward to see them interact with the other cast of heroes in Doomsday.

Karate Kid: Legends
After 6 badass seasons of Cobra Kai, they’re gonna give us this cookie cutter cringefest? One of the most lame cash grabs I’ve ever seen. Terrible story, villains, dialogue, characters, action. The fight scenes had awful editing, with shaky cams, too many cuts, even slowmo and freeze frames. Tournament was just fast forwarded. This movie had zero heart. Villains were comical. Jackie and Ralph barely did anything besides giving the most basic boring platitudes and the training montage was so bad. This so called reboot doesn’t even give good homage to the past movies and is just uninspired fodder. My half star only goes to the funny joke at the very end of the movie.
