It's the winter of 1945. The Soviet Army is conducting a successful offensive in East Prussia. A reconnaissance company receives reinforcements-young men with no combat experience. Everyone understands that the war is almost over, and command decides to gather them into a single squad and leave them in the rear, on a small estate where a German family lives. Against his will, Sergeant Major Ivan Rodin is appointed commander. One day, one of the soldiers discovers two boxes filled with valuables, including paintings, in a coal shed. Pototskiy, an art historian by training, briefly examines the finds and declares them a true treasure: Greek and Roman gold, sixteenth-century paintings, and Renaissance jewelry, most likely looted by the Nazis from private and museum collections. The owner of the estate, former Wehrmacht Colonel Gottfried Mielke, says that most likely, these boxes were left there without his knowledge by a recently stationed SS sabotage unit. And it soon turns out that the SS hadn't forgotten about the abandoned treasures.
