As a person from Newfoundland, I can say they did a very good job portraying the province. The actors also did a very good job with the accents. The show itself was enjoyable. Great soundtrack also!
  • pretty good some heavy lovecraft inspiration which is cool i was also heavily inspired by lovecraft and named my cat after his cat so i dedicate this review to my cat ni

I've been hyped for this one for months, so I'm a little disappointed with how it turned out. The Newfoundland setting is fantastic, the small-town atmosphere really works, and the mystery surrounding the creature had me hooked early on. Josh Hartnett is great, and I liked how the story mixes the monster horror with the town's struggles and the family's complicated relationships. There's a lot of potential here, and the first half had me expecting something pretty special. Unfortunately, the second half loses quite a bit of steam. The story gets increasingly messy, some of the side plots feel like distractions, and the environmental themes become more interesting than the actual creature horror. The finale also feels pretty underwhelming after all that buildup. Still, the setting, Hartnett's performance and the genuinely intriguing premise make it worth watching. Just a shame it never quite delivers on what had me so excited in the first place.

a working class, antiexploitation, cli-fi, retelling of free willy but with icebergs and cephalopods instead of whales was not what i thought i was getting into when i started this, in the best possible way.

An excellent premise and first episode, but plots start to fall short near the end - it screams of budget changes and rewrites. Feels like it was written to be 10 episodes, not 6. A fun watch, but nothing to write home about. Good to put on in the background while doing other things.
  • Meh, Not bad though nothing to rush home for!
  • Mixed feelings about this but overall we enjoyed it. Seemed about the right length at six eps, started to drag a bit near the end. Cast and sets were pretty amazing. Always love seeing Mackenzie get a solid role. She's always been good. Felt like "they needed a bigger boat" thru a lot of it but they did a good job keeping the mystery going about what was happening to the town.

A thoroughly watchable six-part creature thriller set in a struggling Newfoundland fishing town. Josh Hartnett plays a widowed fisherman confronting an ancient, intelligent cephalopod while trying to keep his family and community together. The sea-monster mystery, coastal atmosphere and brisk pacing are the main attractions. The corporate resettlement scheme and the rather bizarre Old Hag subplot make things more complicated than necessary, but the story brings its emotional themes together nicely in the finale. Not especially tidy, but entertaining throughout. I appreciated the ending's suggestion that the creature was never quite the villain everyone assumed.
