Where to Watch X the Unknown
- Stian Andreassen8 april 2026From Prof. Quatermass to Dr. Frankenstein, Hammer Studio was a powerhouse of sci-fi and fantasy in the 50s and 60s, usually with a dash of horror in the mix. This one was released between The Quatermass Xperiment (1955) and Quatermass 2 (1957), and sort of falls into the same format – creepy whodunnit creature features drenched in paranoia, with an American lead. X is lightly inspired by Godzilla (1954), where the creature of the feature is terrestrial, rather than from another planet. And like Godzilla it has ‘atomic’ features. Mild-mannered Dean Jagger feels a little out of place as the nuclear scientist who must both convince the millitary of the threat and come up with a sollution to neutralize it. He’s too soft-spoken and grandfatherly to pull it off convincingly. The special effects are few and far between, but when we get to see them they are stellar. You can tell The Blob (1958) was heavily inspired by this movie.
