Hans flickvän är dotter till en ultrakonservativ senator. Om denne får reda på Vals bakgrund kommer han säkert att förbjuda det planerade giftermålet.

An all time great comedy with absolutely amazing performances throughout. Everyone kills it. Even the unlikable son (wanted him to get punched many times throughout the movie) comes around ok in the end.

I wasn't prepared to laugh so hard so many times. Update: I watched it first by myself, then with my mother-in-law, and the third time with my wife. And it all happened within one week. I'm just so happy and honored to introduce people I love to this movie.

Robin Williams stars as Armand Goldblum the owner of "The Birdcage" a gay bar and his partner Albert is the main star "Starina" played by Nathan Lane. Armands son wants to get married and his fiancé's father is a Conservative Senator played by Gene Hackman. His co founder of a moral Christian group id found dead in the bed of an underage black prostitute and to distance themselves they decide to go see her fiancee and his parents. There daughter has told them that his father is a cultural attache to Greece and his mother is a housewife. Chaos ensues has Albert tries to man up and the apartment has to be toned down. Armand and his son decide to get his biological mother to help out but she is late and so Albert dresses up to step up. The dinner is a disaster and when the senator and his wife find out the truth they go to leave just as journalists turn up. The senator can't leave or it will be all over the news so Albert has a plan. So they all get out dressed in drag which is hilarious especially Gene Hackman. The chemistry between Williams and Lane is great and the scenes in the apartment during dinner are so funny. Hank Azara is also in it has the Goldblum's houseboy and his performance is hilarious and so is his accent. Thoroughly enjoyed it

Funny charade they had going. Spartacus made me laugh out loud a couple times. Williams and Lane made a hilarious pair.

“chewing gum helps me think.” “sweetie, you're wasting your gum.” such a funny and heartwarming film. everything is spectacular, from the production and costume designs to the way the camera explores the space. the opening scene that pushes in from the ocean into and around the club is so energetic and immersive and there are plenty of other moments like that, like when armand is serving the guatemalan peasant soup. the ensemble cast bounces so well off of each other, and the absurdity of nearly all of the characters bouncing off williams’ comedic straight man is just exquisite. i will say the entire evening spent during the dinner was so anxiety inducing despite how funny it was; it’s honestly exactly how i felt watching uncut gems, which is a wild statement to make but it’s true. loved this movie.

😂😂😂 20 years later and still one of the funniest movies ever. Just brilliant.
  • I imagine this worked better in 1996, but in 2026 it feels a little dated aside from the fact that conservatives are still generally horrible bigots. The jokes that didn’t need to overly lean on stereotypes were good, though I didn’t find any of them to be laugh out loud funny. Val gets an award for worst son ever.

This is a rewatch, gladly. I needed a laugh today and I love the on-screen companionship and chemistry and comedy between Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. The story is silly and vibrant and wild and unbelievable at times, I just love it. So good.
