I ett försök att lämna sina problematiska liv bakom sig återvänder tvillingbröderna Smoke och Stack till sin hemstad för att börja om, bara för att upptäcka att en ännu större ondska väntar på att välkomna dem tillbaka.
- rg9400−4 dSinners could easily have felt like another tropey movie, another entry in a long line of movies covering this type of topic. However, I was very pleasantly surprised to see how unexpected and original this movie truly felt. There are certainly influences throughout, but the movie unfolds in an unpredictable way that kept me engaged. The first half is methodically paced before everything escalates in the movie's explosive second half. There are some staggering sequences throughout with searing imagery paired with a masterful score from Ludwig Göransson. While there are plenty of shlocky genre touches, there is a surprising amount of thematic depth to Coogler's directing, with subtle symbolism and cultural context that makes this more than just a standard no-thrills ride. The movie balances this with the thrills and entertainment factor though, never letting it feel overtly allegorical. This is best demonstrated by numerous moments of levity that are expertly placed throughout the movie to add comedic relief in the intensity. The acting is immersive, and even if I was not necessarily blown away by Michael B. Jordan's twin turn, I did genuinely believe there were two separate characters on screen and could easily identify who was who. It's Miles Caton who really feels like the performer of the movie though. All of these elements combine to give this movie a signature that feels masterful and distinctive, and you can't ask for anything better when leaving an IMAX theater. This is a fun, thrilling movie with depth and expert craftsmanship, catch it on the biggest screen you can. And stick around because there is a crucial mid-credits scene that should honestly just have been put before the credits rolled.
- Kit Lazer18 april 2025It’s a horror movie about vampires in the American South, 1932, but that’s all just set dressing. It’s such an intoxicating blend of genres, a movie that is a melting pot just like the cultural heritage this movie explores. A lot of times when one actor plays two characters in a movie, it’s neat but the performances suffer, it feels like a gimmick, but Michael B. Jordan is able make Smoke and Stack feel like two distinct, living, breathing people. It’s part crime-thriller, there’s a dash of a coming-of-age story, drama, romance, notes of a musical, it’s a stew packed with spices, and the horror simmers and simmers before coming to a rolling boil, kinda like FROM DUSK TIL DAWN. I would have watched four hours of this. I want more. It’s gorgeous, you’ve gotta see it on the biggest screen possible to appreciate the scope, the aspect ratio changes – the Cinematographer was Autumn Arkapaw, one of far too few women in charge of the camera. The sound track is alive, it’s the main character, the pulse of the movie but the score, by Ludwig Göransson who just won an Oscar for composing OPPENHEIMER and won previously for composing BLACK PANTHER, is the fangs always lurking underneath. There’s so much subtext to sink your teeth into here, the way Coogler brings in Asian immigrants, the Irish, Indigenous People – and makes it a story about all of these hardworking people, the people who bulit the real America just trying to cut loose, be free. What does freedom look like? Drinking deep, playing cards, singing from the gut about things you can’t explain you just know, dancing until you sweat; and sex, desire, can’t forget that, the writhing pulsing primal urges. But the powers that be warn all who have toiled and suffered under the sun all day to make them safe and rich that any who engage in this wanton abandon are SINNERS. They say, "Yes, you’ve worked our fields, yes, you’ve fought our wars overseas but don’t you dare sing and dance and be merry on this land you’ve bled for." Go see Sinners. Trust me, you’ve earned it.
- DarlingInThePlexx20 april 2025This is hands down the best movie I’ve seen in years. I’m not even being dramatic—Sinners connected to me emotionally in a way few movies ever do. The character development? Flawless. The symbolism? Chef’s kiss. The music? Oh my God the music. It’s the kind of soundtrack you don’t just hear—you feel it in your bones. And I’m not even a hardcore blues fan like that. That’s how good it is. I saw Sinners TWICE—and if you’re near a 70mm IMAX screening? Run. It’s absolutely worth it. That one scene with the dancing? Literal goosebumps. Unreal. Some people don’t call this a horror movie, but to me, it’s cultural horror at its finest. Not everyone fears the same things—and Sinners understands that on a level most movies never touch. Michael B. Jordan gave a phenomenal performance, but honestly? The whole cast crushed it. No weak links. Just pure storytelling, heart, and atmosphere. Not seeing Sinners should be illegal, frankly.
