Damn. I feel bad for Tarsem Singh, I'm guessing this was not what he wanted originally. Coming from the Cell and the Fall I was really hoping for amazing visuals and a story full of subtext, but his was not the case. The casting and acting is great, but that's about it for the positives, and even the small twists near the end kinda fell flat. What could have been an awesome concept and story in the end just turns into a lame ass action thriller. What a disappointment.

Self/less is one of those mid-tier science fiction thrillers that doesn't aim to redefine the genre but delivers a slick, engaging ride nonetheless. Directed by Tarsem Singh, the film uses the classic sci-fi premise of consciousness transfer as a backdrop for what's essentially an action-thriller about identity, consequences, and the price of immortality. The acting across the board is solid, with Reynolds giving a grounded performance as a man caught between two lives. Kingsley, as always, brings gravitas to his role, even if he's only present for the first act. Still, there's an odd disconnect between their portrayals, a mismatch of speech pattern and energy that makes it difficult to believe one mind truly inhabits the other. That's not on the actors so much as the filmmakers. A touch more attention to continuity in characterization could have made the transition far more convincing. Visually, Singh's direction is polished and restrained compared to his earlier, more stylized work (The Cell, The Fall). The film is handsomely shot, the action sequences competent, and the pacing tight enough to keep you watching without much complaint. Yet there's little here that lingers once the credits roll. In the end, Self/less is a good little film: not great, not terrible. It offers a high-concept hook, decent performances, and a few nice moments, but it never transcends its formula. It's the cinematic equivalent of a well-written holiday paperback: you enjoy it while it lasts, and then you put it down without much need to revisit it.
