It is Kurosawa exploring both humanism and existentialism, two common themes at the center of many films throughout his career. And he put on a masterful show of his mastery of light and framing. It's highly underrated, as far as I'm concerned.

Japan, ca 1820. Den unge medicinaren Yasumoto kommer till den lilla landsortsstaden Edo för att börja sin praktik. Han upptäcker att han inte alls skall syssla med finare privatpraktik, utan han är istället placerad på ett allmänt sjukhus med fattiga patienter. Där ska han bli upplärd av den äldre och hetlevrade byläkaren Niide och Yasumoto vantrivs allt mer.
