Where to Watch Rebecca
- Rob MacKinnon3 juli 2025That Mrs. Danvers is a real piece of work.
- keyser281462 juli 2025An all-time classic. Avoid the Netflix remake. Hitchcock at his best. The central lesson in this story is to avoid making assumptions fueled by your own insecurity, but the way its done and the impacts in the story are so deep, it becomes a meditation on human communication. Like Citizen Kane, here's a classic so well crafted and well-told that through its age only becomes more timeless. Its also different enough from the book that it becomes its own entity, and the credit has to go to Daphne Du Maurier for such an adaptable yet timeless story. Audible produced a reading of it in the 2010's that becomes a third way to experience it, also excellent and dream-like. This is maybe the only movie I can think of where the title character has a palpable presence and looms over every image, character, and conversation in the movie; but never appears, is never voiced, and was never even casted.
- Rocco DOrazio29 december 2024Some absolutely vicious portrayals of jealously in this. Joan Fontaine's slow descent into guilt driven solitude is so well crafted. There's some great music that is used in the first half to heighten this nightmare. Much like The Lady Vanishes it's essentially perfect until the final 30 minutes. Then there's this odd choice, which feels as if it was done by a studio exec, to flip the main focus to Mr. de Winters murder investigation; really ruining something special.
