- Garrett Wilkins1 juli 2026Julia Ducournau’s feature debut delivers an incredibly bold, boundary-pushing exploration of identity and desire that seamlessly fuses extreme body horror with a deeply sophisticated coming-of-age drama. Garance Marillier gives a phenomenal, fiercely physical performance as Justine, a lifelong vegetarian whose world fractures after a veterinary school hazing ritual triggers an uncontrollable, taboo craving for flesh. Rather than relying on cheap shock value, the film uses its stomach-churning elements as a brilliant, provocative metaphor for sexual awakening, bodily autonomy, and the breakdown of strict social conformity. Backed by a hauntingly atmospheric score and clinical, elegant cinematography, the narrative builds a dense, localized tension that feels entirely unique to its bizarre academic setting. While the film’s metaphorical depth and stylistic confidence are undeniable, its unflinching commitment to visceral, transgressive visuals means the narrative choices can occasionally feel intensely alienating on a first viewing. The story deliberately prioritizes a hypnotic, slow-burning psychological descent over traditional thriller pacing, which might test the endurance of general viewers who aren't prepared for such a graphic aesthetic journey. However, for dedicated horror aficionados and indie film purists who appreciate uncompromising craftsmanship, it stands as a masterclass in tonal control, offering a deeply intellectual and beautifully grotesque cinematic experience that lingers long after the final frame.
- Varun19 oktober 2024It starts off with a bang but eventually meanders around aimlessly. The beginning hazing scene gets your adrenaline pumping and is also quite anxiety inducing. The griminess of the cinematography and the vet school culture keeps rising, with some incredibly gross scenes that even made my desensitised brain go EWWW. Also the strange weirdness of people’s relationships and actions, which is common in these absurd French films, is a bit comedic at first. But the pacing just gets slow and boring, the behaviours of the surrounding students are completely unrealistic and the main characters behave in dull ways that don’t make you feel any connection to them. I don’t think this movie had much to say metaphorically either, not that I needed it to but if it was just meant to be a gross movie that entertains, I did not find any fun, crazy or unique scenes to remark about towards the second half of the film. An empty film that relies purely on shock value ain’t for me but at least it was better than Saltburn.
