The February 9, 2017 daylight murder of unarmed 17-year-old Quanice "Moose" Hayes by Portland Police Bureau Officer Andrew Hearst's three close-range AR-15 assault rifle execution shots marked the beginning of unimaginable tragedy and grief for the large, close-knit Hayes family and the community. As family members are drafted into this nightmare no human should experience - they subsequently become "their own heroes," seeking each other out and bonding together for activism, support, and life-sustaining friendships. In "Moose," the 2019 feature length documentary film, writer/activist Jeff Thomas Black explores the unfathomable cost of police murder, through the powerful words of victims' families and their inner circle of supporters - a view most often ignored, mischaracterized, and censored by police-press-release printing media outlets. In addition to the story of Quanice Hayes, the film "Moose" connects shocking stories from numerous other victims, and takes a broad look at the community and family impacts of "qualified immunity," the justice system, and police gang culture.
