Tense and Engaging with a Subtle Edge "Magpie" is a quiet but effective thriller that builds its strength through atmosphere and restraint. The movie creates a steady sense of unease that keeps you involved throughout, without relying on huge tension spikes, but capable to satisfy the viewer until the very end. The performances are solid and well balanced, giving the film a grounded and believable core. There is a subtle intensity in the way the characters are portrayed, which helps maintain the tension without needing to overdo it. Visually, the film leans into a clean and controlled style. The direction focuses on mood and framing, creating a slightly cold and distant atmosphere that fits the story well. The soundtrack is understated, supporting the tension without becoming intrusive. The script moves at a measured pace, allowing the tension to build gradually. It keeps things simple but effective, maintaining engagement without unnecessary complications. The restraint in the writing works in its favor, even if it occasionally feels a bit too safe. At times, it could have pushed a little further, either in its emotional impact or in developing its ideas more deeply. Still, it remains a solid and enjoyable watch. Its quiet tension and controlled approach make it consistently engaging, even if it never fully reaches a higher level.

A big plot twist in he end a little slow for me

One of those films that exists purely for the [spoiler]. Characterizations are razor thin. We barely get any information or backstory beyond the fact that this couple (Daisy Ridley and Shazad Latif) has a marriage that has grown stale with each side harboring some resentment towards the other. But when their daughter lands an acting role along side a famous actress Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz, Ben (Latif) begins to seek a relationship outside of his marriage. Despite the lack of characterization, I still enjoyed it quite a bit. It’s sleekly shot. In particular, I liked the look of the period piece production that the daughter is starring in. I did predict how the finale would play out, but enjoyed it nonetheless. A breezy good stream at home flick.

A Lifetime movie style story with an elevated script and a great twist ending.

It's a thriller, and for all the Screenwriting 101 simplicity of many of its scenes, it builds toward a climax that's disarmingly fun and satisfying.
