Adam, a recovering neo-Nazi, is introduced to this secluded pastoral setting by Ivan, the Lutheran pastor and caretaker of the church, who has also taken three other individuals in need of guidance under his wing. The relationship between the two is unusual and distinct from the start; Adam learns of Ivan’s past without any attempt at persuasion or reinterpretation of reality. Indeed, this is Ivan’s central struggle: thanks to his steadfast faith, he manages to soften the edges of reality and keep moving forward, even when the truth is incredibly hard to swallow. Adam, driven not by malice but by sincerity and extreme bluntness, tries his best to force Ivan to confront his own grim reality. A series of heated exchanges and turbulent events follows, stirring something deep within Ivan; after yet another piece of devastating news, he begins to seriously question his faith and, consequently, loses the will to carry on. Just when the film—having repeatedly seemed on the verge of breaking Ivan—leads the viewer to believe all is lost, a rebirth occurs. It is not merely a recovery from yet another blow dealt by life, but a genuine regeneration—one that finally breaks through to Adam, forging a bond that will never be broken. Despite its existential and inquisitive nature, the film maintains an ironic and sarcastic tone in its less pivotal dialogue, ensuring it never becomes too heavy or difficult to digest. The use of color and specific framing choices emphasizes the emotions and themes the film seeks to convey at any given moment. Striking examples include the storm scene—symbolizing a total loss of control—and the newly planted apple tree at the film's conclusion, an obvious symbol of rebirth. The performances by the ever-essential Mads Mikkelsen and Ulrich Thomsen lend genuine feeling and immense credibility to the film’s subject matter, without overshadowing the excellent supporting characters. It is a peculiar, thought-provoking experience that once again blends comedy—offering humor and moments of levity—with predominantly psychological drama and even violence.
