Twelve-year-old Orin arrives at Wedwood Academy, a hidden school where elemental magic is taught with strict rules and even stricter secrets. Orin struggles to control his rare fire magic, marked by the red streak in his brown hair-an omen others notice even if they pretend not to. At his side is Jax, his sharp-minded best friend, calm, observant, and far more aware of the politics of magic than he lets on. They quickly reconnect with Lia, a quiet, brilliant student whose honesty masks something carefully hidden. As lessons begin and rivalries form, the academy feels uneasy. Strange shadows appear at night. Sirens sound when they shouldn't. Teachers grow tense, and students are warned to stay in their dorms. During a sudden shadow attack on the campus, Orin recklessly rushes to fight, summoning his fire sword for the first time in real combat. The attack is repelled, but the damage leaves lingering fear-and raises questions no one wants to answer. Orin meets Lily, a girl who knows the camp grounds far too well, and begins to realize that Wedwood's history is far darker than the official stories. As Lia recovers from a mysterious collapse, her odd habits and nighttime disappearances catch Orin and Jax's attention. Unknown to them, Lia has been slipping beyond the academy's borders to meet Kael, a boy tied to shadow magic and the growing threat outside Wedwood. Kael warns her that the elemental world is nearing war-and that Orin and Jax are already part of it through bloodlines they don't yet understand. Friendships are tested as secrets pile up. Orin senses that Lia is protecting them from something far worse than detention or expulsion. Jax pieces together clues that suggest the academy itself may be preparing for conflict. By the end of the year, Wedwood no longer feels like just a school. It feels like a front line. The shadows are no longer distant, and the trio realizes that surviving Wedwood may mean choosing sides in a war that has already begun-whether they are ready or not.
