Nick and Angie, a married couple, live with Angie's snobbish mother Daphne and Nick's cockney father Sam in adjacent flats. The contrasting personalities of Daphne and Sam, forced to coexist, drive the situational comedy.

Daphne is being wined and dined by Giles in his flat and she compliments him on his mastery of Chinese cuisine. Arrivals and DeparturesDaphne is annoyed with Giles for cheating over the Chinese meal but relents when she learns that he is a genuine major. Winner Takes AllSam unveils his newly-stuffed penguin, which he calls Giles, much to Daphne's displeasure. Having established that Sam does not intend stuffing a dead elephant Giles proposes a poker game with the loser relinquishing all claim to Daphne and moving to Australia. Giles wins but Angie discovers that he has cheated and persuades Daphne to do the right thing by telling Sam. - Ill Met By CandlelightE6
Ill Met By CandlelightAngie and Nick are off to Paris for their wedding anniversary, taking a beautiful candlestick Giles has given Daphne to give them as a present. Unfortunately it turns out to be stolen - along with lots of other valuables, which - unlike Giles - are found in his flat. Things are bad enough for Daphne but when baby Joe gives her a health scare she has every reason to be glad of Sam's support.
