France, 19th century: One afternoon, two elderly gentlemen, Bouvard and Pécuchet, meet on a park bench and engage in a conversation. They discover that they are both scribes and have less than a month to retire. They share common interests in science, literature and art, which sparks an instant, symbiotic friendship. Later on, when Bouvard's godfather dies and leaves him a generous sum of money, he buys a farm on the countryside and invites his friend to move there to indulge in the sciences. Their dilettantish attempts to crossbreed a goat with a sheep, to smash the atom or expose the hidden weaknesses of science usually result in utter disaster, yet the geeks persevere and live the life they have always wanted.
