Aspiring singers perform auditions in front of four coaches who have their backs turned to them. Coaches who like the voices they hear turn around, and the contestant gets to decide which coach will mentor him/her.

The next challenge the contestants face is the first stage of the knock-outs, in which they must carefully select and perform a 'killer song' that will elevate them above their team rivals, as the coaches whittle their eight chosen singers down to three.

Naturally, with the contest reaching its conclusion, the stakes have never been higher for the eight remaining contestants, who will need to produce barnstorming performances in order to secure a place in the semi-finals. After weeks of assessing the would-be stars from the comfort of their sofas, viewers at home now receive their first chance to voice their opinions via a public vote that will decide which act will be progressing to the contest's penultimate round.

The remaining contestants must once master their nerves and take to the stage to determine whether the tutelage they've received at the hands of Will.i.am, Ricky Wilson, Paloma Faith and Boy George has paid off. As was the case last week, the identities of those would-be stars progressing through to the grand final will be decided by the viewers at home, who are encouraged to take part in a public vote to determine which act will leaving the contest.
