Cranky but likable L.A. PI Jim Rockford pulls no punches (but takes plenty of them). An ex-con sent to the slammer for a crime he didn't commit, Rockford takes on cases others don't want, aided by his tough old man, his lawyer girlfriend and some shady associates from his past.

The Rockford Files Ratings & Reviews
- flavo43January 12, 2026The Rockford Files is one of television’s most effortlessly charming detective series, anchored by James Garner’s pitch‑perfect performance as Jim Rockford—an ex‑con turned private investigator who’d much rather avoid trouble than dive into it. Set in sunny California, the show blends mystery, humour, and character‑driven storytelling into something warm, witty, and endlessly watchable. What makes the series stand out is its balance of excitement and levity. Rockford isn’t a superhuman sleuth; he’s resourceful, reluctant, and often hilariously outmatched, which makes his victories all the more satisfying. The supporting cast adds colour, and the rotating cases keep the show fresh without losing its grounded tone. Even the iconic answering‑machine cold opens contribute to the world‑building, offering quick, funny glimpses into Rockford’s chaotic life before each episode begins. Smart, stylish, and full of personality, The Rockford Files remains a gold standard for character‑driven detective television.
- Dave BrodbeckJuly 12, 2025This is one of the most influential tv series of the 1970s. Garner is the opposite of pretty much everything TV detectives were up until this point. Garner's performance, along with Stuart Margolin, Noah Beery Jr., Joe Santos and Gretchen Corbett, make you feel like you are watching actual friends interact. There is comedy, action and of course car chases. Also, Garner and the producers were not afraid to tackle the social issues of the 1970s. Watch it.
