The Returned opens in a small mountain community which is rocked to its core when several local people who are presumed dead suddenly re-appear at their homes. Despite having passed away some years earlier, these ghostly characters appear in human form, they have not aged, and they are completely unaware of their own fatality. Determined to reclaim their lives and start over, they slowly come to realize that they are not the only ones to have been brought back from the dead. Their return augers torment for their community when a series of gruesome murders bear a chilling resemblance to the work of a serial killer from the past. This is a homecoming like no other.

They have not aged, and they are completely unaware of their own deaths. Camille and Simon assume they can rejoin the world of the living as though nothing has happened, but their return throws their friends and family into a state of turmoil. Camille's sister Léna has continued to grow up without her sibling beside her, and Simon's wife Adèle is just about to get remarried, to Thomas. Meanwhile, lonely nurse Julie receives a visit from a very strange little boy. Seven years ago, the town was struck by a series of bloody murders. Now it seems the killings have started up again.

SimonAdele attempts to come to terms with Simon's 'return' as things get emotionally complicated. Camille tries to restart her old life but discovers the situation at home has changed and is introduced to Pierre, an odd and charismatic figure who predicted The Return.

JulieLife in town is becoming gradually more disturbing. Determined to come out of hiding, Camille invents a new identity, Lena is horrified by a mysterious physical affliction, and Julie finds herself paralyzed by fear as an old trauma resurfaces.

VictorLena's health is turning for the worse and she's convinced it has something to do with Alice. While Adele and Simon begin to rekindle their romance, Julie decides something must be done with Victor, who may be implicated in a shocking death.

While Camille is rejected by Frederic, Simon is violently isolated of Adele and Chloé, whereas Thomas, in a state of self-defence, does not hesitate to draw over him. On his side, Victor wanders in search of his assassin.

LucyThe town is affected by a power cut. Pierre forms a community around Camille, who is now regarded as a kind of 'prophet'. Julie finds refuge at Laure's house with Victor, whose body is undergoing a strange transformation. Meanwhile, Léna grows closer to Serge but has to escape back to the town.

AdèleCamille finds purpose when she decides to invent images of an afterlife to comfort her friend's parents, but is distraught when they commit suicide in the hopes of meeting their son sooner. Pierre shows Claire his shelter stocked with food and firearms, believing that the appearance of the Revenants marks the end of days. Lucy appears to have gained understanding regarding the purpose of the Revenants, and persuades Simon that he no longer needs Adèle; father Jean-François' betrayal of him to the police only pushes him further to her. Serge and Toni attempt to track Lena, and Toni glimpses his deceased mother in the forest. While trying to cross the lake by swimming, Serge disappears under the water.

The HordeTensions are high between the living and the dead, as a newer, creepier wave of the returned descends upon them. With the townspeople in fear and the stakes higher than ever, everyone will have to choose sides.
