The Cannon family runs the High Chaparral Ranch in the Arizona Territory in 1870s. Big John wants to establish his cattle empire despite Indian hostility. He's aided by brother Buck and son Billy Blue. When Blue's mother was killed (in the first episode) John united his family with the powerful Montoyas by marrying their daughter Victoria (whose brother Manolito now lives with them as well).

    Time of Your LifeThe men deliver a herd and celebrate in the local town. The town is rough and Blue has the misfortune to draw the ire of a professional gunman. Blue decides he must stay in town and face the man against the wishes of his dad and the men.

    A Time to Laugh, a Time to CryA female friend from Manolito's very early days returns to visit his dad's ranch. She has refused an arranged marriage and is a free spirit much like Manolito. He decides she is the one but Comancheros stop his plans when they kidnap her.

    The Brothers CannonBuck angrily parts company with his brother John when a long-smoldering family feud is brought out into the open. Fed up with menial jobs on the Chaparral, Buck is ignored when he complains to his older brother John and so he leaves the ranch once and for all. When Blue also turns against him, John finally agrees to go after Buck who refuses to return.

    A Piece of LandBuck finds silver on a nearby ranch and talks Manolito into partnering with him to buy the ranch. However, both find their free lifestyles catching up with them. They buy the ranch but wonder how to pay it off when they learn the truth.

    Bad Day for Bad MenBuck arrives two days early with a herd for which Big John must pay. He sent Manolito to pick up the money from his father but he is late. When the money is stolen, Manolito tries to make amends by recovering the money to save the ranch.

    To Stand for Something MoreBig John, Buck, Manolito and most of the men leave the ranch so Blue is left in charge. The men left harass Blue resulting in Blue becoming too lax and Big John's prize stallion stolen creating a riff between Big John and Blue.

    Trail to NevermoreThree bandits chase Big John, Victoria and Manolito, injuring Big John and running off the horses. They make their way to a ghost town where a man claiming to be the sheriff helps when the bandits return to the town.

    Apache TrustAn Army shipment of rifles is stolen by Apaches. Blue is taken captive by the Chief Morales until Big John proves the Apaches were not involved in the attack. Manolito locates the real culprits but no one knows it or his location.

Victoria's own life is in the balance when she realizes there is little hope for the injured man.

Promoter Gar Burnett and daughter Trece charm their way into being invited to the Chaparral Ranch as part of a scheme to blackmail John Cannon. Enamored of the girl, Blue refuses to believe that Trece was aware of her father's plot.

Convinced that the source of the fear is a former employee, John directs a search for the man. Cannon and his men are stunned on learning they have been tracking the wrong man after they find their quarry dead, victim himself of the mysterious marauder.

    The Journal of DeathVictoria is injured when a prisoner, a doctor being held for murder by a marshal, tries to escape. Big John is left with no choice but to have the prisoner operate on her. He has to go against the marshal who believes Victoria will die.

    Friends and PartnersTired of the daily grind as cowhands on the Cannon Ranch, Manolito and Buck leave to operate their own recently-purchased spread and find they have only added to their woes. Convinced they can have an easier life by being their own bosses, Manolito and Buck tell John of their decision to go out on their own. It is not long before the somewhat lazy Manolito and the less-than-neat Buck realize that as friends they make bad business partners.

In need of new help for an upcoming cattle drive, Joe hires drifter Jelks, whose attitude and actions are questioned by the boss. Dissention erupts between John and his foreman over the new man, who inadvertently solves their differences by proving one of them wrong.

Any doubts as to Rondo's courage are soon dispelled however, when he is challenged by three men out of his past.

Jason Adams reveals his intent to bring in neighboring rancher Henry Simmons on a long-standing desertion charge, Billy Blue makes an ill-advised effort to warn Simmons and his daughter Martha. Resigned to giving himself up, Simmons prepares to do so but, fearing for her father's life, Martha reacts and provokes a military siege of their home.

Blue's new authority enables him to exact a sweet revenge on Manolito and Buck.

    New Hostess in TownBuck and Victoria are held up as they travel to her dad's hacienda with $1500. Victoria is taken hostage by the robbers and forced to work as the hostess in a bar. Buck heads after her but is captured so they plot their own escape.

Travis Winslow leads to Buck's hiring as a scout for Winslow and his detachment of men, who are escorting a military gold shipment through Apache country. En route, Buck learns that the Indians are not the only threat.

Blue is chided by men of the Chaparral for assuming his drawings have merit. Blue has the last work, however, when an editor sees some of his work and offers him a high-paying job in the city.

    No Trouble at AllBuck and Manolito go with Victoria to protect her on the way to another ranch to help deliver a baby. However, an attack by Apaches lead to Victoria being taken hostage by an Apache followed by three bank robbers who threaten to kill her.
