Season 1 Ratings & Reviews
IGN Movies
R.L. Shaffer
And like it or not, if Ren & Stimpy helped pave the way for SpongeBob SquarePants then SpongeBob's success in turn helped, in some way, shape the quirky animation styles and narrative tones of several hit shows on both Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.
AV Club
Zack Handlen
Like those sky flowers, it doesn't make perfect sense. But it's perfect nonetheless.
TIME Magazine
James Poniewozik
Like Pee-wee's appeal, SpongeBob's lies in his innocence. He's the anti-Bart Simpson, temperamentally and physically.
USA Today
Kelly Lawler
Twenty years later, that pineapple under the sea is still pretty fresh.
Variety
Laura Fries
Stopping short of the vein-popping gross-out antics of Ren and Stimpy, but edgier than Rugrats, SpongeBob SquarePants is a thoughtful and inventive cartoon about a hopelessly optimistic and resilient sea sponge.
Slate
Daniel Schroeder
The best SpongeBob episodes live in that space between what adults enjoy and what kids enjoy. "F.U.N. Song" is a perfect example.
People Magazine
Terry Kelleher
Well worth diving for.
Den of Geek
Rob McLaughlin
Insane, fun and completely bonkers... there is something for everyone to love in one of the most fun-packed and inoffensive cartoons ever.
Vanity Fair
Laura Bradley
This show is a perfect storm of appealing visual style, kooky humor, and absurdism.
Common Sense Media
Emily Ashby
This show is sweet, well-intentioned, and full of zany humor and silly scenes that will appeal to many viewers.
Slate
Virginia Heffernan
And still each show contains moral questions, after a fashion. They are not the kind that find answers in ordinary children's fare (be kind and tolerant), but rather the pressing, if tawdry, dilemmas that adults face every day.
Pajiba
Joelle Monique
SpongeBob was able to keep the attention of children and adults alike with little shame.
indieWire
Hanh Nguyen
While the series is clearly geared more towards juvenile tastes, its daffy plots and imaginative environs are just strange and joyful enough to appeal to adults as well.
