During the Peninsular War Sergeant Richard Sharpe is promoted to Lieutenant after saving the Duke of Wellington's life. He is given command of a squad of riflemen, the best shots in the army. He soon earns a reputation for being the man to entrust a dangerous mission to and Wellington regularly finds tasks for him.

Sharpe's Rifles1809, the Peninsular War. Sergeant Richard Sharpe saves General Sir Arthur Wellesley's life and is commissioned a Lieutenant in the 95th Rifle Regiment. He is immediately given a mission behind enemy lines. For this he is given a squad of unruly troops who happen to be the best shots in the entire army. Due to how he came to be an officer, earning their respect will be difficult.
