Police Squad! Ratings & Reviews
- RichardOctober 18, 2025Saw this one after The Naked Gun hit and grabbed the DVD when I realized it was the origin story. Only six episodes, but every one packed with sight gags, deadpan delivery and absurd brilliance. Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin was already iconic by then, but seeing him in this earlier form felt like discovering a secret prequel. The jokes come fast, the sets are cheap and the commitment to nonsense is total. The announcer voice, the freeze frame endings, the “special guest star” who dies in the intro, it’s all there. You can see the DNA of Airplane! and Naked Gun in every scene. Watched it already primed for the humor and it still landed. The DVD had no frills, but the episodes didn’t need them.

- grantssMay 15, 2025A hilarious forerunner to the Naked Gun movies. Detective Frank Drebin is a member of Police Squad, a special detail of the Police Department. Together with his boss, Captain Ed Hocken, he investigates murders and other major crimes. His methods are effective and along the way much hilarity ensues. The TV series that lead to the Naked Gun series of movies. If you’ve watched the Naked Gun films you know what to expect: Hilarious, outlandish sight gags and clever word play wrapped around a police investigation featuring Leslie Nielsen. This has a few other strings to its bow too, e.g. the inconsistent episode titles. The only problem is that within an episode or two you know what to expect so the humour does lose some of its originality and impact fairly quickly. Overall though, a very funny series.
- ርልዪረSeptember 28, 2025Running for just 6 episodes of 30 minutes in 1982, "Police Squad" was a very short lived Television series from the Producers of the hugely popular comedies "Airplane 1&2". "Police Squad" stars Leslie Nielsen as inept Police Detective "Frank Drebin", a character Leslie Nielsen would reprise in the hugely successful "Naked Gun" franchise. As with the "Airplane" movie's, "Police Squad" is packed full of sight gags, clever verbal humour, and slapstick fun. The show itself was popular with TV Critics, but never managed the big ratings it deserved, probably due to middle America still being very much engaged with the sweet, chocolate box, family orientated humour of other Sitcoms. I have no doubt that had "Police Squad" been released 4 or 5 years later it would have been a huge success as the "New Wave" Era of comedy started doing the rounds, gaining traction, and becoming massively popular. However, thanks to the huge Box Office success of the "Naked Gun" franchise (which acted as a sort of big screen, up scale sequal), "Police Squad" found a new audience and army of fan's who love the show. Zany, madcap and crazy fun, "Police Squad" is a enjoyable show that definitely deserves a watch.
