The heroes of the picture are talented doctors who have come up with a unique device that allows you to prolong the life of the human heart. The duration of the film covers the period from 1981 to 2001. Two young talented cardiac surgeons Alexey Kovalev and German Ipatov are trying to come up with a design that will allow treating coronary heart disease without surgery. Ironically, both friends fall in love with the daughter of their mentor, Professor Solodovnikov. Alexey is a born scientist, ready to sacrifice a lot for the sake of science, including the tranquility of his loved ones and his personal life. Herman is a different kind of person: sober-minded and not so obsessed. Realizing that he is not as talented as Alexey, he decides to go the other way.
