Bret and Bart Maverick (and in later seasons, their English cousin, Beauregarde) are well-dressed gamblers who migrate from town to town always looking for a good game. Poker (five-card draw) is their favorite but they've been known to play such odd card games as Three-toed Sloth on occasion. The show would occasionally feature both or all three Mavericks, but usually would rotate the central character from week to week.

War of the Silver KingsBret Maverick takes down a money-hungry gambler in the town of Echo Springs. He befriends an old drunk, who turns out to be a successful judge. Maverick strikes a deal with the gambler, Phineas King, to merge the ""silver lady"" mine with ""the new hope"" mine.

Point BlankBret arrives in Bent Forks after being run out of the last town by posse, and gets a job as a spotter. But it's a set-up by a scheming couple so they can get out of town with the money they've stolen.

According to HoyleSamantha Crawford is a con artist employed by George Cross. Cross once lost $50,000 to Bret Maverick and is determined to get it back. Two riverboat owners staked Maverick $5,000 which he promptly loses to Samantha. Samantha claims Cross is her father and needs the money to get out of jail. Maverick forms a partnership with Samantha and purchases gambling equipment in a scheme to put Joe Riggs, a crooked game room owner, out of business. Samantha and Cross doublecross Maverick by selling the equipment to Riggs.

Stage WestBret comes to the assistance of a woman who came west when she learns of her husband's gold strike. A ruthless family of ranchers have killed her husband, though, and try to convince the young lady that they are her late husband's partners.

Relic of Fort TejonBret wins a "full-blooded Arabian mount" in a poker game, but soon discovers he's been conned - the Arabian mount turns out to be an overly-affectionate camel. While fleeing the dromedary, Bret stumbled into a small town and runs into an old flame who's engaged to the town's mayor. Bret soon learns that the mayor runs a crooked gambling hall and isn't above shooting card players when they stumble onto his cheating ways.

Hostage!Bret Maverick meets up with brother Bart in New Orleans where they plan to obtain passage on a riverboat where big money poker games are held but end up getting involved in the kidnapping of the riverboat owner's daughter instead.
Stampede

StampedeBret, and new character Dandy Jim Buckley, join a gold rush to even a score with Cadiz, a crooked gambler who robbed them. Cadiz's brawler Battling Kreuger is taking on all comers, and en route Bret, crashes into a possible challenger, mountain man Noah, complete with a pet skunk.
The Jeweled Gun

The Jeweled GunBart agrees to pose as the husband of a woman who's traveling through the badlands. Big mistake because he soon finds himself the target of a killer.
The Wrecker

The WreckerBret Maverick wins the right to join a ring of shipwreck salvagers, but he is soon in debt up to his neck when he engages in a spirited bidding contest, spending $21,000 for a ship whose cargo is apparently only worth half that. Brother Bart soon finds out why their unknown rival was willing to bid so high - in addition to bales of silk and rice, the wreck's hold is full of illegal opium.
The Quick and the Dead

The Quick and the DeadMaverick is looking for the man who paid him with stolen money during a poker game to clear his name with a marshal who is looking for him. His investigation leads him to a town where he takes a job as a dealer in a saloon. Not only does he find information regarding the men who stole the money but also gets involved with a feud between one of the men and Doc Holliday.

The Naked GallowsBart's nosing round Bent Spur pursuing his friend's murderer. Bart was so down on his luck, he spent a winter trapping beaver outside town. Bent Spur's overstocked with red herrings, who too easily slip through the fingers of Sheriff Barney F, including the killer, broken out of jail by the evil Brink. The murder victim's brassy lady-friend/casino partner is a quick rebounder, who immediately sidles up to the suspicious Bart.

The Third Rider

The Third RiderBart Maverick is helping two men, one of who is injured, when a posse appears. One horseman flees and escapes, while the other is killed by the posse. Bart becomes the chief suspect in a robbery/murder the horsemen are suspected of.

Rage For VengeanceBret is drawn to an attractive woman and offers to work as her bodyguard as she travels overland. The fact that one of her suitcases $200,000 also piques his interest. Things go awry when en route Bret discovers that the money is counterfeit.

Rope of CardsIt's shades of 12 Angry Men when Bret becomes the lone holdout for a not guilty verdict in a murder trial. He has to use a long shot card trick to convince the other jurors that the defendant might be innocent.

Diamond in the RoughAfter being beaten up, robbed, and shanghaied, Bart sets out to expose the man responsible, a respected member of San Francisco society, as a diamond swindler.

Seed of DeceptionBret and Bart ride into a small Arizona town and are mistaken for Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday despite their protestations to the contrary. Things start to look bad for the Mavericks when an outlaw gang ride into town and the local sheriff convinces the crooks that the two gamblers are the famous lawmen. The gunsels aren't about to let two men get in the way of their planned bank robbery no matter what their reputation.
