Season 1 Ratings & Reviews
Boston Globe
Matthew Gilbert
It's a "Masterpiece" mystery, and so it's easy to watch, not least of all thanks to the always engaging Manville and a game cast, some of whom appear in both time frames. It's good, twisty fun.
Variety
Amber Dowling
The duality of the mysteries aside, Magpie Murders isn't game-changing material, but it certainly scratches that nostalgic itch if you're looking for a murder mystery with entertaining twists and interesting characters.
Paste Magazine
Alexis Gunderson
I am happy to say that it is extremely good. Stars Lesley Manville, Conleth Hill, and Tim McMullan are compelling.
TIME Magazine
Judy Berman
The season for cozy mysteries is upon us, and Magpie Murders offers two of them in one miniseries.
Wall Street Journal
John Anderson
Much of "Magpie" might have come off as gimmickry if the two lead performances weren't so astounding.
Collider
Emily Bernard
While at times the show-within-a-show can grow a bit tired, Magpie Murders is a very enjoyable murder mystery with enough revelations and twists to keep you guessing until the end.
Los Angeles Times
Robert Lloyd
Above all, it plays as a delightful game, with - as in any whodunit worth the name - the clues in plain sight. The conventions of the genre are evoked only with affection.
NPR
John Powers
Magpie Murders neatly riffs on the relationship of art and life. It's especially astute about the consolations of detective novels.
TV Insider
Matt Roush
Horowitz plays with convention beautifully...
