Season 1 Reviews

You'd be better served to watch any of the other detective dramas to which I've compared the lifeless "Lucifer." Just heed my warning: Stay away from this mid-season mediocrity fest.
New York Times
Neil Genzlinger
Even Satanists will be reaching for the remote when ... The Devil deserves better than ... Oh, heck, Fox's Lucifer is so terrible that it doesn't even warrant the effort of a clever opening line.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Gail Pennington
Protests have been heard against turning Lucifer into a good guy, but in fact, he's mainly just a smug jerk with a creepy smile. And as his reluctant sidekick, German is as bland as her counterparts on a lot of better shows.
AV Club
Alasdair Wilkins
Where Lucifer the comic series offered a deep meditation on the nature of free will, Lucifer the TV show inserts its title character into what is basically the premise of Castle.
Los Angeles Times
Robert Lloyd
Indeed, the mysteries are almost beside the point; your mileage will vary precisely based on how you like the leads. Take it for a spin.
Common Sense Media
Melissa Camacho
DC comic adaptation is dark but has a charming antihero.
USA Today
Robert Bianco
So the best advice is to do precisely what you'd probably do anyway: Watch Lucifer for as long as you're enjoying it, and stop when you're not.
Newsday
Verne Gay
This louche Lucifer is mostly a cop procedural snooze.
The Hollywood Reporter
Daniel Fienberg
Somewhere along the way, you're very likely to find yourself wondering if this is the least interesting thing Beelzebub has ever done while killing time on the mortal plane.
TV Equals
Jordan Alsaqa
My main hope would be that the show is able to incorporate a bit more of the fantastic into its week-to-week proceedings. For now, though, there's enough to like in Ellis' performance to give the show a few more viewings as it attempts to find itself.
Slant Magazine
Chris Cabin
Lucifer is the type of show that can't get over the cleverness of its central conceit.
Observer
Vinnie Mancuso
There's a lot of faux-coolness here; strip clubs where everyone has clothes on, a lot of snarky jokes met with "Oh you're just the devil," etc etc.
The Daily Dot
Gavia Baker-Whitelaw
Fox's Lucifer proves that despite their ubiquity, comic book adaptations far from a guaranteed success.
San Francisco Chronicle
David Wiegand
There's nice but predictable chemistry between Ellis and German, and although Fox only made one episode available to critics, the show's concept is so obvious, it's easy to see exactly where this will go, unless it gets canceled first.
HitFix
Alan Sepinwall
Turning Lucifer into The Mentalist with slightly more CGI seems a waste of the character Gaiman and Carey made so vivid, but it still could have led to a decent show. This is just awful.
The Young Folks
Yana Grebenyuk
Even though the show is a bit predictable, the way it doesn't take itself too seriously mixes well.
Entertainment Weekly
Jeff Jensen
The conventional crime-time format incinerates everything strange and spirited about the concept.
Screen Rant
H. Shaw-Williams
Lucifer has done itself a lot of favors by selecting a strong lead performer, but Ellis can't carry the show all by himself. The show's writing is too tame to fully embrace all the implications of a main character who is literally the Devil.
Variety
Brian Lowry
If something smells a little rancid, unfortunately, it's less likely brimstone than the stale whiff of a warmed-over concept.
Film School Rejects
Neil Miller
For now, I'm intrigued by the potential and I enjoy spending time with Lucifer, but if this turns into CSI: Devil's Nightclub, I'm out.
