The first season of the television series Lassie premiered in the United States on CBS on September 12, 1954 and ran for 26 episodes until its conclusion on March 6, 1955. Produced by Robert Maxwell, the episodes follows the adventures of a female rough collie named Lassie and her young owner Jeffrey Miller. In 1958, the first through third seasons began syndication under the title "Jeff's Collie."

Though the first season of Lassie has never been released completely to home video, some episodes from the first season have been released to DVD. On November 25, 2003, Classic Media released a three episode set, "Lassie: Best of Jeff's Collie," which included the series first episode, "Inheritance". A second set, "Lassie: 50th Anniversary Collection", was released on September 14, 2004 and contained 24 episodes from across the entire series. The set includes three episodes from the first season: "Inheritance", "The Lion", and "Lassie's Pups".

Inheritance

InheritanceYoung Jeff Miller inherits a neighbor's collie and, while Lassie has trouble adapting to the Miller home, she is mistreated by the deceased's misanthropic hired man Wills who hangs on to steal the deceased's hidden cash.

ArithmeticJeff is failing arithmetic due to his problems with fractions, so Ellen tells him he may not go to the circus if he doesn't pass his next test.
The Colt

The ColtTo make up for ignoring Jeff, Gramps brings him home a colt Jeff names ""Domino."" Jeff then starts ignoring Lassie in his enthusiasm over having a horse.
The Gun

The GunEllen, at first mortified by Jeff's discovery of his deceased father's rifle, allows him to play with unloaded weapon but Jeff proves reckless with the weapon when Mr., King loads it to kill a fox on his farm.
Mr. Peabody

Mr. PeabodyJeff is enthralled by the plethora of tall tales told by the new farmhand Mr. Peabody but Gramps is chafed at folksy Peabody's partial falsehoods and peculiar ways and what he perceives as these things influences on Jeff.

FeudWhen Gramps quarrels with Matt Brockway after a hotly contested checker game, both men forbid their sons to play with each other. After Jeff and Porky's first attempt to fix the problem goes horribly wrong, so the boys hide in the woods in hopes that in ""saving"" them Gramps and Matt will be friends again.

Sale of LassieWhen Gramps has back problems, Jeff thinks Gramps will die if he does not have an operation the family can not afford and begins a twenty mile hike to Creston to sell Lassie to Porky's cousin to get the operation money.

The RustlersThe calf Jeff is raising for the county fair vanishes the same night Lassie comes home injured and covered with mud--then she mysteriously starts chasing Ellen's car.
The Fighter

The FighterA man who, unknown to the Millers, has been a prizefighter who killed a man in the ring signs on to be a Miller farmhand and is perceived by formerly admiring Jeff as coward for not standing up against another farmhand bully.

The ContestEllen cares for a divorced old friend' s troubled daughter whose repressed anger is manifest in the destruction of things dear to others even to the extent that the girl will put Lassie mortal danger so Lassie will lose a racing contest.

The Brat

The BratEllen offers the boys a special treat if they will babysit a boy while she is called out on an errand. But the kid turns out to be more than Jeff and Porky can handle.

FatherJeff whose father is deceased is told by a bully that he does not belong at the church father and son banquet but,, after Jeff rejects Gramps company, Ellen injects her self into the event and gains the participants' admiration.
