He deals on a daily basis with the problems associated with frontier life: cattle rustling, gunfights, brawls, standover tactics, and land fraud. Such situations call for sound judgement and brave actions: of which Marshal Dillon has plenty.

Phoebe StrunkAn about-grown girl who lost her family to violence is taken in by a kind farmer and his wife, who intend to adopt her. Before they can do so, the girl is spotted in town by disgraceful Phoebe Strunk and her gang of worthless sons, who assume that the pretty girl, like anything else they fancy, is theirs for the taking.

The HungerA farmer and his grown son bully his wife and grown daughter. When the farmer locks his daughter in the cellar, his wife sends word to Dodge for help. Matt and Doc arrive to free her, and Doc takes in the underfed, abused girl as his patient. While recovering her strength, dressing in pretty clothes for the first time, and reading romantic books brought to her by Kitty, the girl begins to see Doc as her knight in shining armor.

Cotter's GirlFatally injured in a saloon fight that he started, town drunk Cotter asks Matt to find his daughter Clarey and to deliver her to his sister. Matt soon locates Clarey, a teenage tomboy living alone on a remote farm. Cheerful and clever, but also wild and unlettered, Clarey will need some grooming before she's ready for her aunt.

The Bad OneGant Parker sends his daughter away to school in the east to protect her from the bad in the west. When she meets a young boy who thinks he's bad just because his father was, she tries to convince everyone he's not as bad as he tries to appear by lying to everyone about what he's done.

The CousinMatt meets a newly released inmate, Chance Hopper, who he spent many years with growing up on a ranch in Texas. When Chance tries to find out if Matt is still as perfect as he always appeared to be, his cohorts are staking out a stage carrying gold and Matt figures prominently in their plans.

When a local boy sees an Indian squaw, they stir up trouble in town for her when she gets hurt and has to see the doc and stay in town. JebJeb, wanting to see something besides the farm, finds a horse grazing while out walking. He rides into Dodge and when he strikes up a friendship with Ab Singleton, sells it to him. When Ab is killed by a man who says the horse belonged to his partner, Jeb feels guilty for having caused his death and now must escape that partner who only believes he is a horse thief.
The Quest for Asa Janin

The Quest for Asa JaninA young man is convicted of killing the saloon girl he wanted for his own. Matt is so sure that the young man is really innocent that he goes on the road after another suspect to prevent an unjust hanging.
