Season 1 Reviews

This is a better show than the first episode might have suggested, one that deserved a better shake... Comedy pilots need time to develop and room to let their stories play out. Networks would do well to remember that.
Observer

It's just an enjoyable show. I've forgotten how nice that can be. This is just a good sitcom, with a likable cast and funny lines. In 2017, we deserve it.
CNN.com
Brian Lowry
The best bits, however, come more in spite of the TV environment than because of it. And like most of the TV shows that even satirically seek to pull back the curtain... that's about as much good news as Great News can muster.

A lack of invention, in both the characters and the world-building, makes it so easy to ignore much of Great News

Andrea Martin -- with her big eyes and the way she contorts her mouth -- makes a meal out of reaction shots. Her very oohs and ahhs are like a symphony of funny, and they get glorious play in the big-hearted sitcom Great News.

You may have trouble figuring out what "fake news" is in the real world, but you'll have no problem figuring out that Great News is pretty funny in the TV world.
Los Angeles Times
Robert Lloyd
It has its untaxing pleasures. It would not be a stretch to call it amusing.
NPR
Linda Holmes
Over the first five episodes, Great News gets more sure-footed and funnier.
USA Today
Robert Bianco
Unfortunately, once you get past "it stars Andrea Martin," News doesn't have much to say for itself.
Minneapolis Star Tribune
Neal Justin
Tina Fey will inevitably let down her legions of TV fans with a real stinker. But not yet.
The Hollywood Reporter
Daniel Fienberg
Rather than taking a scathing look at the CNNs or MSNBCs or Fox Newses of the world, the show is a much more gentle tweaking of local news and morning shows.
Newsday
Verne Gay
The series ambles along at its own congenial pace, lighthearted and largely without a care in the world.
New York Times
Neil Genzlinger
It's not 30 Rock II. But it is a terrific showcase for Andrea Martin, still funny after all these years.
New York Magazine/Vulture
Jen Chaney
My only major complaint about this show is that I wish there were more of it to watch right this very minute.
Variety
Sonia Saraiya
It has a warm, big ensemble, which begins to feel like a big weird family as the season goes on. In the long view, that's probably exactly what Great News is hoping for.
Flavorwire
Lara Zarum
Ultimately, it works, because 'Great News' is really about the overlap between personal and professional life - which is what any decent workplace comedy boils down to.
Yahoo! TV
Ken Tucker
Great News steamrolls over your reservations. The show is jammed with jokes; if you don't laugh at one, there for six more waiting to tickle you in the next 30 seconds.
Common Sense Media

There's enough here to keep you entertained, even if the overall show needs a little polish.

It's mildly amusing enough as it begins.

Jon Negroni
Created and written by 30 Rock writer Tracey Wigfield, NBC's Great News is anything but "new" in its comedic format, but that's not always a bad thing.
