Information networks continue to expand and crimes continue to become more complex. In this society on the borderline to chaos, an organization that specializes in hunting down and eliminating crime was established. This is Section 9, the so called "Stand Alone Complex" (S.A.C.), under the direct supervision of the Ministry of the Interior.
Its duties include a wide range of investigations, such as responding to critical cyber crimes, guarding VIPs within the country, revealing political corruption, investigating violent murder, and dealing with top secret assassination cases. The elite S.A.C. is at its best in cyber confrontations, but it is also extremely capable of physical confrontations by utilizing high quality cyborgs.

E3SA: A Modest Rebellion; ANDROID AND IA certain type of android, the GA07_JL, nicknamed Jeri by its users, has been affected by a virus. Recently, all Jeri model androids have been committing "suicide". E4C: The Visual Device will Laugh; INTERCEPTERWhile working late, Togusa gets a call from one of his colleagues from his days on the police force. It seems that he's uncovered something strange happening with the investigators in the Laughing Man Unit, a special task force formed to catch the infamous cyber criminal known only as the Laughing Man. But before he can meet with Togusa, he's killed in a car accident. - C: The Inviting Bird will Chant; DECOY
E5C: The Inviting Bird will Chant; DECOYThe Laughing Man, having returned after a six-year absence, threatens to assassinate the Superintendent-General of the police. Aramaki, however, thinks it's a cover-up. He briefs Section 9 on the prime suspect, Nanao=A, an incredibly gifted programmer who developed the micro-machines that are currently the foundation of Serano Industries. - C: The Copycat will Dance; MEME
E6C: The Copycat will Dance; MEMEAs Togusa and Bato track down Nanao, Motoko and Paz are attempting to protect the Superintendent-General at a press conference about the police misuse of interceptors. When the virus does hit, Motoko and Paz have to act fast to save the intended victim. Meanwhile, the road to Nanao=A hits a dead end. - SA: Idolatry; IDOLATOR
E7SA: Idolatry; IDOLATORSection 9 is on the trail of Marcelo Jarti, a South American revolutionary hero who has arrived in Japan. However, Jarti is a hard man to catch because he employs look-alikes to deceive people. E8SA: The Fortunate Ones; MISSING HEARTSMotoko's friend Courtin asks her to come to the hospital where she works. It seems a little girl just received a heart transplant, but the donor's family doesn't remember ever agreeing to donate the heart. When Motoko mentions this story to Aramaki, he tells them to determine if this is tied to a ring of black-market organ smugglers supposedly run by the mafia. - C: The Man Who Dwells in the Shadows of the Net – CHAT! E9C: The Man Who Dwells in the Shadows of the Net – CHAT! CHAT! CHAT!Using her net avatar, Kusanagi enters a chat room dedicated to the Laughing Man. Various theories are passed around the chat room as the members view various bits of evidence from the Laughing Man case. While in the chat room, Kusanagi homes in on an older man sitting at the table who seems to have more knowledge about the Laughing Man incidents than anyone else. After confronting the man and exchanging information with him, Kusanagi and one of the other guests are suddenly transferred out of the chat room and she briefly sees the Laughing Man. - SA: A Perfect Day for a Jungle Cruise; JUNGLE CRUISE
E10SA: A Perfect Day for a Jungle Cruise; JUNGLE CRUISEMarco Amoretti, a former Navy Petty Officer from the American Empire, has come to Japan and is committing heinous acts of brutality against women. Section 9 is assisted in this matter by the American Empire's CIA. While this doesn't sit well with Public Security's members, Batou finds the whole case particularly hard on his psyche as the nightmares from his past rear their ugly head. - C: In The Forest of the Imagoes – PORTRAITZ
E11C: In The Forest of the Imagoes – PORTRAITZThe Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's database has been hacked into, and classified material has been stolen. Section 9 traces the hack and determines that the hack job originated from a facility that helps people with Cyberbrain Closed Shell Syndrome. Togusa goes undercover to investigate the social welfare facility, and immediately encounters suspicious behaviour from the facility's supervisors. Togusa manages to learn that a person called "the Chief" visited the center during the week that the MHLW was hacked, but before he can determine the significance of this information Togusa is discovered; simultaneously, the facility's security system unexpectedly goes online, and Section 9’s databases are subsequently hacked, leading Kusanagi and Batou to make an emergency insertion to evacuate Togusa. - SA: Tachikoma Runs Away; The Movie Director's Dream – ESCAPE FROM
E12SA: Tachikoma Runs Away; The Movie Director's Dream – ESCAPE FROMEarly in the morning Batou's Tachikoma self-activates and leaves the Tachikoma storage bay to explore the outside world. While roaming the streets of Niihama, the Tachikoma encounters a young girl named Miki who is searching for her lost dog. The Tachikoma decides to help the girl, and together they manage to find the dog. While on their journey, the Tachikoma stumbles upon a cyberbrain being sold in a market that contains a ghost, and brings it back to the storage bay. When the Tachikoma returns to Section 9, technicians begin extensive tests to determine why the tank went AWOL in the first place, while Section 9 members turn their attention to the cyberbrain in an effort to determine what the brain contains. When one of the lab technicians investigating the brain links with it and becomes "lost," Kusanagi volunteers to go after the missing man, leading her find the technician watching a movie that lacks a beginning or ending which brings her to tears. - SA: Automated Capitalism; ¥€$
E14SA: Automated Capitalism; ¥€$The Chinese government contacts Section 9 to let them know that an assassin may have entered Japan to kill a famous reclusive millionaire. Despite their considerable efforts, however, Section 9 is unable to contact him to warn him, so they go directly to his residence. - SA: Chinks in the Armor of the Heart – Ag2O
E16SA: Chinks in the Armor of the Heart – Ag2OSensitive information has been stolen from a U.S. Naval base, and the primary suspect is a former Paralympic silver medalist boxer named Pavlo Zaitsev, who works on the base as a hand-to-hand combat instructor. The Public Security office has instructed Batou to go undercover to spy on Zaitsev, a man whom he admires, to see if Zaitsev is somehow related to the missing information. Batou wants his suspicions to be wrong and for Zaitsev to be innocent. The assignment calls into question Batou's attitude on his duty towards Section 9 and the decisions it forces him to make. However, Batou discovers that Zaitsev is indeed the spy and reluctantly turns him in. - SA: The True Reason for the Unfinished Love Affair; ANGELS' SHARE
E17SA: The True Reason for the Unfinished Love Affair; ANGELS' SHAREWhile at an international police conference in London, Aramaki drops by to visit an old flame who's now in the wine brokering business. She asks him to help her put a stop to the corruption in her company, but he tells her that it's out of his jurisdiction. Just then, however, two thieves break into the building and take them hostage. - SA: Embraced by a Disguised Net; CAPTIVATED
E19SA: Embraced by a Disguised Net; CAPTIVATEDSection 9's next case is a rash of mass-kidnappings. Rumor has it that a crime syndicate is harvesting organs and selling them on the black market. As they research the case, they realize that time is running out. - C: Left-Behind Trace; ERASER
E21C: Left-Behind Trace; ERASERAfter being shot, Togusa's in the hospital and about to go into surgery, but he is desperate to pass on what he's learned to the rest of Section 9. As Togusa fights for his life, the rest of Section 9 takes over the case, but others within the government have learned of the investigation and are not happy. - C: Corporate Graft; SCANDAL
E22C: Corporate Graft; SCANDALMotoko is about to be fitted for her new prosthetic body. But when the doctor arrives and begins the procedure, it's clear that she has no intent of letting Motoko out alive. Motoko assembles the remaining team members at HQ for one final mission. E26C: Public Security Section 9, Once Again; STAND ALONE COMPLEXTogusa has been released from jail and he's given papers showing the dissolution of Section 9. Out of work and depressed, he tries to find information on the others, but there is nothing available. Thinking that he has nothing left to lose, he goes to assassinate the man responsible when he is stopped by–Batou!
