Season 1 Reviews
Boston Globe
Ed Siegel
Jones' reactions to his freedom and the newness around him are terrific, although the producers won't be able to go to that well as often in future episodes. What they can do, though, is maintain the aura of mythic hero, which plays so well.
New York Daily News
Michael Hill
The main problem is that this unlikely pairing of crime fighters simply reeks of a stale formula that can't be hidden by stylized direction or even the considerable skills of Jones.
Entertainment Weekly
Ken Tucker
The biggest problem with Gabriel's Fire is that it's wildly overblown and melodramatic.
New York Times
John J. O'Connor
With a few modulating touches here and there, ''Gabriel's Fire'' may not be embarrassingly trounced by NBC's long-running ''Cheers.''
Deseret News (Salt Lake City)
Scott D. Pierce
Excellent drama, starring the outstanding James Earl Jones as an ex-con, freed after serving 20 years for murder, who goes to work as an investigator for the white woman lawyer who got him out.
People Magazine
David Hiltbrand
The initial episode is exotically scored, stylish and well acted... I worry, though, that as the series moves further from prison and more into your standard TV plots, [James Earl] Jones won't be afforded the substance to exercise his talents.
South Florida Sun-Sentinel
Tom Jicha
[James Earl] Jones is such a commanding presence the pilot is worth watching just to see him work. How well this stands up over time as the series evolves into a standard crime drama is another matter.
Baltimore Sun
David Zurawik
In addition to Jones' performance, "Gabriel's Fire" is also distinguished by a richly textured and evocative camera style.
