Season 1 Reviews
Entertainment Weekly
Darren Franich
I worry this series will fall victim to its own provocations - and there is an ongoing threat of gorgeously filmed violence. In its quieter moments, though, this is a sensitive teen drama, digging past characters' identities into their souls.
Salon.com
Melanie McFarland
Despite the scenes of uncomfortable sex, [Sam] Levinson never fails to spotlight the fragility and confusion and, yes, sadness underneath that bravado.
New York Magazine/Vulture
Jen Chaney
Zendaya is also exceptional as Rue, the glue that holds this sprawling ensemble piece together. But I can't say for certain that I fully like it, either, because it's gratuitous for reasons that don't always seem necessary.
Boston Globe
Matthew Gilbert
It's heated up, it's blunt, it's lurid - but artfully so.
Vanity Fair
Sonia Saraiya
That Zendaya came out of the Disney machine adds a thrill of transgression to her performance, which holds the entire production together-grounded, self-effacing, charming, and so assured.
The New Yorker
Doreen St. Felix
Rue & Jules's relationship is the jewel of Euphoria. I'll keep watching because I desperately want to protect them. Otherwise, the show so far is a highly self-conscious study of ennui, overfull with fancy camera tricks and thousand-dollar getups...
New York Post
Robert Rorke
In Euphoria's cynically nihilistic vision, today's teens have been warped by technology into soulless, self-medicating androids who use each other for cheap thrills! What will happen to them? OMG.
Bitch Media
Taylor Crumpton
Euphoria misses the mark by using sexual assault and racial microaggressions as the very foundation for a Black male teenager character.
Slate
Christina Svenson
A coming-of-age show caked in glittery hedonism...
San Francisco Chronicle
Tirhakah Love
Quickly and quietly, Euphoria's technical know-how is the stuff of TV-making dreams, empowering its story in a beautiful symbiosis that's made it HBO's latest success story.
New York Times
Mike Hale
The juggling of plot lines results in scenes continually being cut off before they develop momentum. It's too bad, because scene by scene, piece by piece, there are things to like.
Vox
Emily St. James
I kind of hated Euphoria's pilot, but I kept watching further episodes because of Rue and Jules's dizzy-sick meeting at a house party -- I felt it in a way the rest of the show simply couldn't approach.
The Ringer
Alison Herman
Criticizing [it] for being in poor taste feels futile. It's like telling an actual teenager they're being obnoxious: All you're doing is confirming their vision of the world as provocateurs (them) versus prudes (you)...
Andscape
Soraya Nadia McDonald
What's equally fascinating and disturbing about Euphoria is that it's not set in a vaguely medieval universe full of giants, dragons and ice zombies. Its purview is suburban America, right now, and it's not a pretty sight.
TIME Magazine
Judy Berman
Euphoria's nihilism feels as contrived as a Burger King ad.
Chicago Sun-Times
Richard Roeper
If the second half of this story is as compelling as the first, this will end up being one of the best series of the year.
The Atlantic
Sophie Gilbert
Trolling the Family Research Council with graphic scenes of underage sex, violence, and drug use is easy to do. What's harder is using the same kind of imagery and action to make a point, or a change.
Variety
Caroline Framke
Just like the teens it depicts with such staggering candor, once you get past its immediate attempts to hold the audience at arms length, Euphoria has an undeniable pull that makes it too intriguing to ignore.
Slate
Willa Paskin
That it's easy to buy into Euphoria's nihilistic vision of adolescence as distilled misery says more about us than it does about teenagers: Some people just love a good scare.
CNN.com
Brian Lowry
Euphoria is raw, visceral and sure to be controversial. The main problem is the "why" of it all, other than probing the parameters of how far the producers can push into this terrain.
