The animation style is solid for its era, and the Knight Sabers remain compelling heroines, but the overall production feels like a step down in energy and ambition. One of the biggest shortcomings is the soundtrack—where the original thrived on its memorable, pulse-pounding music, Tokyo 2040 offers a far tamer, less impactful selection that never reaches the same heights. The tone, too, feels softened; the gritty cyberpunk edge and attitude of the original are noticeably diminished. If I hadn’t been such a fan of the first series, I might have approached this revival with fewer expectations. As it stands, Tokyo 2040 is serviceable, but it never quite earns its legacy.
