Ultraman

- Razorbitz22 de setembro de 2026I LOVE ULTRAMAN. I really liked Ultra Q, but Ultraman revived the little kid in me who watched power rangers every day through kindergarten. It's got just the right mixture of whimsy and brutal ultraviolent monster battles that satisfied all of my needs from a series like this. Some episodes Ultraman is a real hero helping out stray monsters, other times he slaughters entire species and ripping the limbs off of creatures left and right--it's incredible stuff and you never know what you'll get. Godzilla even makes an appearance, albeit with a flower around his neck for copyright reasons! The best and worst part of Ultraman is the extremely episodic formula. If Ultra Q was a bizarre attempt at Twilight Zone, Ultraman is Superman if Superman had no moral or ethical center. The lore is nigh incomprehensible and the sci-fi nonsense is very much nonsense, but for every episode that puts you to sleep (outside of the suplexing monsters and such) there are surprisingly poignant and interesting episodes that I truly consider as unforgettable. My personal favorite episode is "My Home is Earth," an episode that genuinely managed to unsettle me, yet had a certain poignancy you wouldn't expect from a series that usually thrives in goofy monster fights. It even got a tear out of me! But there are plenty of interesting episodes and all are worth experiencing at least once. Still, are you so joyless that you can't enjoy a man in latex beating the ever loving snot out of some goofy paper mache creature? At its worst Ultraman is probably at least going to do that, or blow up some miniature specactularly or some such. This series is just fun, and hoo boy is there is a LOT of it. Also want to shout out the generally useless but fun ensemble cast that backs Ultraman up. What the Science Patrol lacks in combat proficiency, they make up for with charm! I've fallen into a bit of a love affair with Ultraman and the wider Tokusatsu lore over the past few years, but even though it's been some time since I saw this series I already feel an itch to rewatch. I think that says it all really. Besides, what other kids series is around that has their superhero ripping limbs and heads off of city sized monsters?
