- The first season of the John Larroquette show had a potential to rewrite sitcom in the 90s and did so so elegantly. A show dealing with alcohol addiction the first twelve episodes designed around the first 12 steps of the alcoholics anonymous program, and some genuine characters that made you laugh. Brilliant. Then the network got involved and started retooling the whole show. The dark opening was changed and at the start of the second season the tone was brightened up. The show could’ve been stellar but instead it was watered down by network executives who were afraid to take a chance. The irony in this is the fact that in 2020 we have shows dealing with this exact issue in a comedy format that speaks the same truth as the John Larroquette show. By the end of the fourth season they wouldn’t even let the whole season play out. I’m an absolute fan of the first season especially in the first shows and the chances they took. This is one of the few network sitcom that hasn’t had a DVD or Blu-ray release. Let alone been played syndication. This show seem to be destined to be hidden away and if you get a chance to see at least the first season you’ll understand how ahead of its time it was. It’s a dark ride!
